Well, here I am a little early...dang phone was ringing early this morning, and I had to get up and answer, and then could not get back to sleep...so came here...I hate being up this early, but when you cant sleep, well, FR is at least here for me...
Lots of food talk going on here...for BigDoms dinner, I am making some sort of dish using lots of stir fried veggies, and jumbo prawns....Safeway had 2 lb bags of frozen prawns(10-12 count)for just $12...thats just $6 a lb, and thats mighty cheap for prawns that big...so we will have them today, along with some steamed rice and a big salad...
BigDom insists on a big salad with every meal...he loves his salad...also insists on a big variety of things in his salad(he likes about 12 ingredients in his salad)...no head lettuce whatsoever, just all other types of lettuce and greens, and then load on other things like carrots, red onions, broccoli, cauliflower, pea pods, green and black olives, sunflower seeds, artichoke hearts, red and green peppers, beans, etc. etc. etc...and then only olive oil and vinegar(all different flavors and varieties of vinegar)....
Hes a salad eating man....
The last summer that we were down to my mom and dads before my dad had died, dad was pretty sick with cancer and moms Alzheimers was steadily increasing in abnormal behavior...I was doing most of the cooking for BigDom and Andy and myself, and for mom and dad....
But mom wanted to make BigDom his salad(everyone knew he had to have his salad, even if no one else was having one)...so I figured, being as it was only salad, and she did not have to use the stove, she would be safe, if I just supervised her with the sharp knife...so there she was, in the kitchen, humming along, and making BigDom his salad...
Well, we all sat down to eat dinner...cannot remember what I made for dinner....but BigDom kept nudging me, trying for mom not to notice...finally I paid attention, and he lowered his salad bowl to show me moms salad...she had a surprise ingredient in there for him...hidden underneath the lettuce, was a great big sharp piece of cobalt blue glass...good grief, what was mom thinking, or doing, putting glass in his salad...obviously her Alzheimers was really getting out of hand....
Had he actually bitten down on that thing, he would have really cut his mouth....we never did say anything to mom, as she would not have even remembered doing this...dad collected all manner of cobalt blue glass bottles and jars and figurines, and even if one piece broke, dad kept the broken pieces in a clear glass jar.....mom must have gotten Doms salad treat from there...
There was no glass in anyone elses food...I guess mom thought a big hunk of blue glass in a salad, just made it rather pretty...

hi sweetie
you are here early
we are having peaceful morning
Bill walked Happy in wash
and then invited Lulu to join him and Happy while they sat in front yard and took the air
our front yard is not fenced in, so it is big treat for dogs to be out there
and watch comings and goings in the street
I put a pot of water in freezer when I woke up at 3 am
so it was frozen solid
Happy and Lulu loved licking it, like popsicle
and when it melted they drank frosty water
I am noticing my happiness is steadily increasing
it's not that I had the blues 3 days ago but it was like being under a cloud
yesterday the cloud lifted
today it is all gone
Love, Palo

my beautiful new neighbor across the street
put out banner on her front lawn this morning saying
''I turned 30 today''
she had big black balloons on it too
when one of the balloons popped, Happy got scared
I guess today is her birthday :)
To: andysandmikesmom
yes, it sounds like she was trying to make a pretty salad for BigDom
and thought the blue glass added to the prettiness

the vanilla coke is not so bad
I find I enjoy it when I dont want the whole coke experience
maybe this is what an off-brand cola tastes like
anyway I like it

rofl you crack me up
bacon and egg sandwiches are delish
when I walked my dog in lower manhattan
I'd stop at candy store
and ask for bacon and egg sandwich to-go
and container of coffee light and sweet
I can't figure out now how I managed to eat my sandwich, drink my coffee, and walk my dog on leash at same time
but I did
new yorkers are so adaptable

;-) There's something very comforting to me about a nice fried egg & crispy bacon sandwich. I use an old cast iron skillet on the outdoor grill's side burner and while the bacon's frying, I prep the bread with plenty of salad dressing.
When the bacon's done and the heat's lowered, in goes Mr.Egg with his yolk puctured to spread the goodness. Shortly thereafter I'm in paradise with my sandwich and frosty cold milk.
Sometimes I'll add a slice of cheese, or some sliced tomatoes for a bigger treat.

Good idea about freezing a pot of water for the dogs..they can lick away, at the ice, and then when it begins to melt, they can have a frosty drink...good thinking...
I am with Happy, balloons popping always make me jump too...
Well, I guess I should start cooking BigDoms dinner now...get ready for him, when he gets up...
See ya later...

Normally during the week, I dont cook bacon and eggs...but all this talk about bacon and egg sandwiches, has gotten my tummy all geared up for such a sandwich, so I suppose now, I will have to make myself one, while cooking BigDoms dinner...

I am laughing at this collection of posts
how we all turned each other on to bacon and egg sandwiches
dont know why it tickles my funny bone so much
maybe cause it makes me feel we all live in one big family
I never knew a bacon and egg sandwich would be intimate

From the outlawcookbook.com: The toast was made from an Ecce Panis sourdough boule; the dark flecks on the cooked egg white are the dried onion bits, toasted in the bacon fat for a minute before I broke in the eggs. Speaking of which, I broke the yolks intentionally by pressing down on the top slice of (buttered!) toast. Otherwise, they break when you bite into them, spurting egg yolk all over your face and beard (if you have one), and dripping down onto your shirt.

At one time in my life, I thought I had a handle on the meaning of the word "service." The act of doing
things for other people. Then I heard the terms Internal Revenue Service, Postal Service, Civil Service, Service Stations...
And I became confused about the word "service."
This is not what I thought "service" meant. Then one day, I overheard two farmers talking and one of them
mentioned that he was having a bull service few of his cows.
SHAZAM!!
It all came into perspective.
Now I understand what all those "service" agencies are doing for us...

I came across a recipe in Gourmet for a paella couscous using them prawns that looked delish.Normally, couscous is so bland that it needs major work, but this approach seemed to give you the fish, starch and crunchy veggies all in one go.

This part of our thread, is now the food and recipie section...descriptions and pics...yummy, what fun....
Gran, that fish platter looks divine....
Habs, that sounds like a good idea, a good use for couscous...
Palo, have a fun time swimming, and twirling in the pool..
Loddy, that bacon and egg sandwich looks divine as well...and as far as egg yolk squirting all over, and running onto your face, well, I think thats just plain fun...however, your mention of facial hair, brings to mind, my dad....
Dad always, always, for as long as I could ever remember, sported a big handle bar moustache...he was quite proud of it...after he retired, he then grew a beard....sometimes after a particularly good sloppy meal, his moustache and beard would be full of scraps and bits of his meal...
Generally, he was pretty good at moustache and beard inspection after the meal, cleaning himself up after the meal...
But one time, when we were visiting and we had all gone camping, after a yummy camp meal, we decided to visit some of the touristy traps up in Mendocino California....we were all excited about going, and no one was really paying any attention to dads personal grooming....
We got to Mendocino, and as usual, everyone went their own ways, and we all met back at the car, when done with shopping...dad was always the last to return to the car, as he had to scour every nook and cranny of every shop...we all had our own car keys, so we were all waiting in the car for dad....
When he got back, he sat down, and promptly gave mom a 'smack' on the top of her head, and said, "Woman, why didnt you tell me I had remnants of my lunch still left in my beard?"
Apparently he caught sight of himself in a store mirror or window, and was horrified to discover that dried pork and beans were making a home in his beard....
In addition to her other duties, mom was supposed to be dads beard and moustache inspector...

This is not a pretty sight - me leaning over trying to bite my monitor.
That fish is gorgeous! It's like I'm seated at the table with you.
Cowboy cooking is pretty simple, but it's honest, and if only the finest ingredients are used, then it can be down-right delicious.
