Ninety-five per cent of Americans believe the US is suffering an affordability crisis, as many report trouble with the rising cost of groceries and gas, according to a survey, conducted by Harris Poll.
Despite stable employment and record-high stock markets, more Americans believe the overall economy is getting worse (57%) than in February (46%), when the poll was last conducted and before the war in the Middle East sent gas prices soaring. Fewer people today also believe the economy is getting better (16%, compared with 28% in February) and more say their financial security has gotten worse.
Even rural Americans, a strong base for Republicans, are feeling more pessimistic: 64% say the economy is getting worse, compared with 46% who said the same in February.

They will because they’re complicit
My Costco regular gas went from $4.78/gallon (6/22/26) to $4.66/gallon (7-2-26)—a 12 cent decrease in 10 days. I plan on checking the price every 10 days. I’m hoping I will see increasing reductions in price.
old news
BS poll. I know no one like this.
Exactly. Most Americans, especially conservative ones, are doing fine because they live by conservative values (personal responsibility, thrift, savings, hard work).
HOW MANY ARE ATTENDING CONCERTS?
HOW MANY GET A DAILY $8 CUP OF STARBUCKS ON THE WAY TO WORK===20 DAYS X $6===$160.00.
A MR COFFEE AT HOME WITH A TIMER IS MASSIVELY CHEAPER.
HOW MANY SEEK EXTERNAL ENTERTAINMENT EVERY MONTH?
HOW MANY KEEP BUYING NEW CARS ON FREQUENT CYCLES???
CLOTHES? MAKEUP? HAIRDRESSERS? MANICURES???
HOW MANY “APPS”ON THEIR FANCY CELL PHONES???
THEY “WANT” THINGS THEY DO NOT “NEED”.
ANOTHER MIX UP OF 4 LETTER WORDS???
THEY ALSO EAT EVERY DAY WITH FOOD STAMPS & OTHER BENEFITS.
Yeah. The half pulling the wagon for the freeloaders.
IF ANY PERSON HERE CAN DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FREE RANGE EGGS & HEN HOUSE EGGS-—I WILL BE GLAD TO LISTEN.
I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE IN HOW THE CHICKENS LIVE-—I JUST DO NOT BELIEVE THERE IS ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE ACTUAL EGGS.
CERTAINLY NOT ENOUGH TO JUSTIFY PAYING THOSE PRICES.
Hi. Retired old fart here.I’m on SocSec’y.
My bills cost me over $1000 a month.
I am 73 and housebound. The only places I go to are via medi-van.
So, I am locked into supermarket delivery or by phone app delivery. Case in point...in person, 2 Subway sandwiches drinks and chips, $22. Delivered..$40
Yes, I do cook at times, when I am not at treatment.
You’re right. People are being squeezed.
Dems stopped representing labor in the 90s and grabbed the rich, leaving labor unrepresented.
Something has to give and the Trump administration has only half way given an answer.
But someone has to represent the middle and working classes.
20 DAYS X $8==$160
TIRED
Oh, I don’t know. The headlines the Leftist media threw at Ronald Reagan were never-ending.
“Half of Americans struggle to afford groceries and gas, exclusive poll finds”
Maybe they mean half of the American tourists in UK struggle to afford groceries and gas?
I mean they have been having gas shortages there.
It’s so bad I have to cut out my profligate spending on unnecessary items! Might have to make my own mocha vente cappuccino lattes. The horror!
The Guardian. Ignore.
It is not bollocks.
Many are struggling like never before, including myself. The price of fish and beef is extreme, even the price of vegetables and fruit is incredible. And seeds and starter plants through the roof. The go-to foods of our grandparents are no longer accessible because of the centralization of food processors and lack of local butchers and meat markets.
Those lesser cuts that used to get you by are gone now- the price of ox tail is insane. Beef tongue- only been able to land one in the last two years. Can’t get hearts either. Shanks? Can’t find them. Soup bones? Nope- all sent to the dog treat companies. Dogs are eating better food than many Americans. The less expensive stores were bought out by Aldis and others.
Truck prices even for used ones- insane for the limited junk available.
I don’t hear any blaming of Trump- we can see the big difference in the crime rate from what it was. But we know that the political parties raped and butchered the country and that they are all profiteering off of the carcass.
There is a general, global sense of malaise much like the 70s that set in 18 years ago or so and never left.
On the plus side, I work with engineers and things are getting better for young engineers. There is some optimism in tech, largely because of what Musk is doing. And it is definitely a relief not being plagued by the global warming propaganda as we used to be… there is the promise of nuclear power again rather than those stupid windmills.
95% of Americans live in The Land of Want. They want it and by God they're going to have it. I live in The Land of Need. If I don't need it, I don't buy it. Try it children, you'll like it.
You're assuming 20 days. Some of these money illiterates get up on Sat/Sun morning and run to Starbucks first thing. I drink 2 cups every morning so my Starbucks bill would be $16 a day, if I ever did Starbucks. Don't get ne started on all of the other trivial crap people "want".
Fools and their money...
