Food prices climbed sharply in December, providing little relief to consumers at the grocery store and adding to the political pressure on President Trump to improve affordability.
The 0.7 percent jump in food prices from a month earlier was the largest one-month increase in grocery prices since October 2022. That was up from 0.2 percent in September, the last month the federal government released month-to-month inflation figures for after the shutdown disrupted data collection.
Compared with a year earlier, overall food prices were up 3.1 percent and grocery prices were up 2.4 percent in December.
The increase could frustrate consumers who have been facing higher costs at the grocery store for years. On the campaign trail, Mr. Trump promised to swiftly enact policies that would bring prices down for food and other products if he was elected.
The sharp increase in food prices is a contrast to overall inflation, which remained steady at the end of 2025. Still, groceries are among the most visible costs to consumers and increases in food prices could be politically painful for Mr. Trump. Food costs were a central issue that plagued the Biden administration during the 2024 election.
In recent months, Mr. Trump has underscored the drop in egg prices, which continued to fall last month, declining 8.2 percent. Retail prices for eggs have been falling after reaching record highs last year amid a bird flu outbreak that hit poultry farms and forced producers to cull millions of hens.
Food categories that have gotten more expensive include fruits and vegetables, which saw their prices rise 0.5 percent from the previous month. Coffee prices climbed 1.9 percent. Beef and veal prices also rose 1 percent over the month and were up 16.4 percent from a year earlier.

Prices are still going up in Metro Atlanta. We can afford it but it cuts into our entertainment fund.
I dont know what they were buying but Turkey, potatoes, eggs were incredibly cheap here and milk was about the same.

IF the food cost increased by .7% EVERY MONTH for a year, the total increase in food cost FOR THE YEAR would be 8.4%, wouldn’t it?
You cannot assume the .7% rise will occur EVERY MONTH as food costs are constantly rising and falling in line with market pressures.
And they continue with 8.4 percent in 2025.
At my age, I consider all my income to be for entertainment.

The 8.4% annualized food inflation is cancelled out by the 2.4 percent annualized food inflation for the other 11 months of the year. A year has 12 months. It is painful for some to admit, but Trump is a God-like genius who have saved our country from the evil aliens from the planet Remulak. The inflation in food is offset by the lower inflation of the other 500 items that are included in the CPI.

Part of the reason still is supply chain constraints. Trump needs to slash regulation to get rid of the restraints that have been in place since COVID. But in truth, tariffs play a part too.
Trump needs to “improve affordability” code for fix biden’s mess quickly or will stamp our little feet!

Not in the Aldi I go to in South Florida. It was just the opposite.
There's just so much you can do with it. My last is meatloaf burgers...I put them on a baking sheet in the oven...then freeze...and use for meatloaf sandwiches.

How much do WE pay to feed every school kid in America...breakfast, lunch and in some places....dinner. And of course we make meals available to them in summer. AND how many of their households are receiving SNAP, too?
