No gold in Israel?

I think our gold is basically considered theirs as well so they are counted in the top line.

Excellent point. Another question I’d like answered (if it would be possible to get the data) is how much gold is owned by citizens too? I want not just the government to have a stable gold backing, I want a significant number of citizens to have financial backing too. That reduces the likelihood of internal chaos (aside from the shallow attention seekers on the left doing “protests” that they don’t even know what they’re protesting for).

Grok:

“Gold Holdings: Official vs. Private
As of late 2025 (end-Q3 data, with estimates for October), the total above-ground gold stock—representing all gold ever mined that remains in existence—is approximately 219,000 tonnes. This figure accounts for cumulative mining output through September 2025, plus an estimated addition for October based on annual production trends.
• Government (official reserves): Central banks and governments hold about 38,400 tonnes (roughly 17.5% of total above-ground stocks). This includes net purchases of 634 tonnes year-to-date through Q3 2025, building on 37,755 tonnes at end-2024.
• Private holdings: The remaining 180,600 tonnes (about 82.5% of total above-ground stocks). This encompasses jewelry (~45% of total), physical investment bars/coins/ETFs (~22%), industrial uses, and other non-official categories.
In direct comparison, privately held gold is approximately 4.7 times the amount held by all governments combined. Official reserves represent a minority of the global gold supply, with private demand (especially in jewelry and investment) dominating the market.”

It would be interesting to get a sense of how much gold the average person holds, and where. I bet India and China would blow the US (and the west in general) away with their individual holdings.

It doesn’t help when our government confiscates the stuff.

I think that would get rather murky, cconsidering some hold only paper that represents gold held by them, but not actually in their possession. While oters actually hold their own physical gold. I believe that may be true in many other countries as well in the form of jewerly etc, as well as gold coins & bars. Some may even have gold that was kept when FDR ordered all gold to be surrendered in 1933 for the Depression, but did not comply, and thatt gold was passed down to surviving family members, or possibly even sold to other private buyers for more than the 20.67 the government was paying per ounce for that gold surrendered, and there is no documentation for their ownership of that gold.

I guess what I am trying to convey, is that getting an accurate number on that is most likely impossible in the U.S., and definitely imposasible in other nations also.

If the accuracy of the gold reserves actually belonging to the U.S. is questionable, then you certainly do not believe an accurate amount could be achieved for privately held gold by citizens would actual be worth anywhere near a reliable value, do you?

The effort to attempt it would be an exercise in futility.

I did a chat GPT do find out individual holdings. Here are the top countries.

Country Gold reserves per person (approx)

Switzerland — ~ 115 g/person (~3.7 oz)
Germany — ~ 39-40 g/person
France — ~ 36.6 g/person
Portugal — ~ 36.7 g/person
Netherlands — ~ 33.6 g/person
Austria — ~ 30.7 g/person
Kazakhstan — ~ 13.9 g/person
Italy — ~ 41.3 g/person (though other sources show ~ 1.34 oz/person)
United States — ~ 23.5 g/person (~0.75 oz)
Russia — ~ 16.1 g/person

Clearly missing is China and India, where there are few reliable sources.

In the US, we hold less than an ounce of gold per person. I am sure there are folks on this forum who hold much more than the average.

I 100% agree. Getting the data on citizen-owned gold would be practically impossible. Especially given that anonymity is one reason for owning gold.

Tonnes means a metric ton of 1000 kg = 2,204.6 pounds........Tons American means 2000 pounds........Two waaay different measures......Then there is the BRITISH Ton called a Long Ton which is 2,240 pounds.

So you have to be clear when negotiating a price in the marketplace else you could wind up short.....

I know - it’s metric.

It’s true we must be clear on terms when negotiating a trade, but we’re not negotiating a trade, we are citing statistics.

I’m sick and tired of ceding ground to the Euro-trash, by using their metric units of measure because we think it sounds more ‘learned’ or ‘scientific’.

Especially when the audience is entirely American, and in fields of science where the US dominates and has always dominated.

This is no different than Americans speaking a foreign language when addressing an American audience - it’s disrespectful and pretentious..

One would never publish a French article in an American publication without first translating it. Similarly, one shouldn’t use foreign units of measure.

The only reason to do that is if one is putting on airs - like those a-holes who order in French here in America to show off.

My wife is an obstetrician and has to resist rolling her eyes every time her peers use Celsius to mark a temperature. We all grew up with Fahrenheit - recognizing 98.6° is a normal - and all the ‘learned’ jackasses insist on saying 37..

They think speaking in a foreign language will make them sound learned.. LOL
It’s funny, they do the same thing with illnesses - they can’t say ‘sore throat’ - they want to say it in Latin or Greek to sound learned.
