It would be interesting to get a sense of how much gold the average person holds, and where. I bet India and China would blow the US (and the west in general) away with their individual holdings.
It doesn’t help when our government confiscates the stuff.
I did a chat GPT do find out individual holdings. Here are the top countries.
Country Gold reserves per person (approx)
Switzerland — ~ 115 g/person (~3.7 oz)
Germany — ~ 39-40 g/person
France — ~ 36.6 g/person
Portugal — ~ 36.7 g/person
Netherlands — ~ 33.6 g/person
Austria — ~ 30.7 g/person
Kazakhstan — ~ 13.9 g/person
Italy — ~ 41.3 g/person (though other sources show ~ 1.34 oz/person)
United States — ~ 23.5 g/person (~0.75 oz)
Russia — ~ 16.1 g/person
Clearly missing is China and India, where there are few reliable sources.
In the US, we hold less than an ounce of gold per person. I am sure there are folks on this forum who hold much more than the average.
