“A handful of haws contain the same amount of vitamin C as sixty oranges (E.O.G., 969).”

Wow!

Growing up, my mother made a few jars of rose hip jam every year. It wasn’t my favorite. I like raspberry or strawberry. I’m a peasant I guess.

We have rose hips all over our place. The best part about living in the woods are the wild berries. Raspberries, choke cherrys, saskatoons, strawberries, plums and a few others. All good!

Dr. Magnus Pyke (the “mad scientist” in Thomas Dolby’s song and video “She Blinded Me With Science”) is also known for having promoted rose hip syrup as a source of Vitamin C in the UK during WWII shortages, when it was difficult to get orange juice.

I pick wild raspberries every July, and usually several gallons full.

I used several wild plants for food and drink in my 20s. I’ll never forget the rose hip tea. Perhaps consuming the seeds is what caused terrible diarrhea,at my in-law’s small house with a louver door bathroom next to the table where everyone sat. No way to camouflage that from a few feet away!

I graduated with Rose. Hips was just her nickname.

Wild raspberries in our neck of the woods are slightly smaller than the garden variety and have a much richer, deeper raspberry taste. That extra flavor makes it worth the time to go hunting for them.

Overdosing on vitamin C also causes diarrhea.

If the dose you are taking causes burning urine or issues behind, then cut back your dose by about 20% and see if that solves the runs. I have taken as much as 24 grams over a 24 hour period and not had that problem. In an isolated wilderness situation I once gave 50 grams of C to a woman who had been stung by 3 yellow jackets in the neck but had left her bee allergy kit at home. This was over an 8 hour period. I had given her 10 grams crushed and mixed with water immediately, and in 20 minutes she was no longer gasping for breath, her eyes were now open, and the swelling all over her body was subsiding. Then 5 grams an hour until she told me to go back to my tent and sleep, she could estimate her dose based on how she felt. She never had any diarrhea problems and she walked out 3 miles the next day with friends.
