Humanity Is Domesticating One of Its Oldest Predators Responsible for the Deaths of Millions
Red State ^ | March 12, 2025 | Brandon Morse

One of the most interesting things about humanity is how it manages to take something dangerous to it, and make it useful to itself.

We took wolves and domesticated them, turning them into dogs, which have done everything from help us hunt, find dangerous items, warn us of impending danger, or even just sit on our laps and lower our blood pressure.

Mankind does a lot of things with its miraculous intelligence, but one of the things it's actually best at is taming that which threatens us.

And it looks like mankind has now gotten around to taming one of its oldest and most deadly predators of all...

The virus.

That said, there are labs out there that are attempting to change the virus to help humankind, not harm it, and it would appear they're already having success.

The idea is that we effectively take viruses, one of our deadliest enemies, and effectively "reprogram" it to attack the things that attack us, effectively making the wolf into a dog all over again.

We’ve had vaccine viruses for about 100 years!

And we have decades-old virus-based entities that we use to manufacture biotech proteins that are the basis of various drugs.

I don’t have access to get beyond the paywall, but it sounds as if this is nothing new.

Behind a paywall.

I assume it’s talking about gene therapy.

Here’s a video of the first gene therapy patient who had the “bundle boy” disease.

I’ll put you guys down as opposing cancer research and cures.

Sure! And I'll put you down as Pro-Zombie-Apocalypse!

I just hope we get the slow and stupid zombies from The Walking Dead, and not the speedy ones from World War Z.

The ones in WWZ behaved in some ways like insects, in particular, ants. Ants use their bodies to create bridges.

My immediate thoughts were:

Domesticated, hardly

DugwayDuke seems to be missing a sense of humor.

BTW, is it yellow, or gold? Ha HA!

An equally true statement.

Overly optimistic viewpoint. Back in 1969, IIRC, the head of the AMA stated that we had overcome bacterial infections and they were a thing of the past. Hindsight suggest he was spectacularly wrong.
There are at least 200,000 different virii in seawater alone. The total amount is estimated as 1 nonillion. (1 followed by 30 zeros)...there are approximately 50 million bacteriophages(viruses that attack bacteria) per 5ml of seawater.
Sometimes when a virus genome is altered it has new body tissues it can attack. For instance, an unaltered virus might attack respiratory tissue, but a slight variation might let it attack other tissues. Not good.
There will be tremendous discoveries that are helpful. We will not know the effect of altered viruses on the whole biome beforehand. Beneficence is sometimes overcome by greed. Rosy colored future predictions are ignorant.
Best cases in point: opioids relieve heavy duty pain, but kill millions. Ethanol brings social lubrication and a mild euphoria, but kills millions.
