Any 1970s Mars mission would have ended in death. There is too much radiation for manned spacecraft of that era (our ours) to handle in deep space.
The stupidity of the American voter, who was responsible for both LBJ and his large majority, hurt this country in a number of ways.
Most people don’t realize how fragile our bodies are and how much Earth protects us.
We can transverse galaxies but we need
to have an Earth environment to do so.
Just check the health of our Astronauts.

I remember reading about it in the Time-Life Science Series book 'Man In Space' while it was still a dream . Voyager II took that tour and visited all 4 of the gas giants. An amazing achievement. Voyager II is still partially operational in Interstellar Space to this very day.
As if the the radiation isn’t enough of a problem, how much food can they take on a mission which would be several years?
The Moon landings were so successful they became boring. Liberals whined about how the money could be better spent here. Rather than an advanced civilization expanding into space we got the Welfare State instead.
No, the radiation wouldn't be fatal, or even much of a problem. There are detection systems to warn of heavy bombardments, which are brief, and sufficiently heavy shielded shelter would be included in interplanetary craft.
