China's 'artificial sun' shatters nuclear fusion record by generating steady loop of plasma for 1,000 seconds
Live science ^ | 1-21-25 | Patrick Pester

The Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) nuclear fusion reactor maintained a steady, highly confined loop of plasma — the high-energy fourth state of matter — for 1,066 seconds on Monday (Jan. 20), which more than doubled its previous best of 403 seconds, Chinese state media reported.

Nuclear fusion reactors are nicknamed "artificial suns" because they generate energy in a similar way to the sun

America still leads in heavyweight lesbians and meth tech. We can make really good meth.

This is China, let’s give it some time and see just how truthful this is LOL.

Yeah, me too. I had the $7 box from Taco Bell the other night.

I guess it would be rude of me to suggest tossing in...

This will have deep ramifications for the development of huge power sources for the development and maturation of AI.

We should be concerned.

Imagine a submarine powered by a fusion reactor?

A miniature fusion reactor could bring about the true development of electric vehicles.

Meanwhile the USA has suffered huge setbacks in this field....our money goes to illegal aliens and to Ukraine, huge bottomless sinkholes created by the woke.

When I can buy one at Harbor Freight, I’ll believe it then.

Of course, it might work, work a few times or once or not at all.

Did it produce more energy than it consumed?

And you still have RAS (Reliabilty, Availabilty, Servicabilty) issues before it can become a reliable source of large-scale power.

Make fun all you want ,but anyone who has worked with Chinese engineers and scientists know they are first rate. They send their kids 6 days a week growing up to primary school where they learn , hard science and mathematics. They have the full calculus and physics track done by the end of secondary school before University. Something Americans don’t do until freshman year. They send their kids to top tier one universities here in the USA where the researchers are also Chinese on staff having got here a generation ago. Look at any major University in engineering, material sciences and mathematics. Look at the names of who is head of staff and who is publishing research. China is easily the world leader in fusion tech and also leaping ahead with fast reactors, and fission nuclear tech. While the USA is eliminating graduation standards and promoting purple haired girl boys , China is raising an army of scientists, mathematicians and engineers. I encourage people to travel to a modern Chinese city at least once. You cannot fathom what they have done until you see it yourself. Massive 10 lame highways, high speed rail everywhere that’s spotless, same for subways.everything is smart as in internet of things. They are not a developing country in their special economic zones they put the EU and most USA cities to shame in infrastructure. Trump is right we need to get off our butts and start modernizing everything or those chicoms will own the 21st century.

You only need a 50 percent electrons to plasma ratio for fusion fission hybrid breeders to work and work well. The plasma generates 14MEV neutrons by the billions, those cross the vacuum and magnetic fields at a bit small fraction of C when they hit the uranium blanket suroinding said plasma they start a fast fission cascade that multiplies the energy by 80 to 200 times while also breeding huge amounts of plutonium via neutron capture. This Chinese reactor is well over Q=0.5 they could put a breed blanket around it today and make net power with that while also making 2500+ KG of plutonium a year just pulsing it for 1000 seconds and let it cascade down, pulse cascade ,pulse ...that’s tech available today. The question then becomes what’s do you do with all that PU , you need fast spectrum reactors to burn it all down to fission ash with no major or minor actinides , if you use PWR you only get one burn cycle and slew of actinides all of which are radioactive for 100K to 1MM plus years. China has a growing fast reactor program and fully reprocessing spent fuel tech something the USA completely abandoned. Fusion is the long term goal, fusion fission hybrid is tech available today provided you have reprocessing facilities and fast reactors to put PU fuel in. One fusion fission hybrid feeds 10 to 20 daughter reactors of a gigawatt each.

You can knock it of with the cut and paste propaganda. I have been in Nucelear Energy for over 40 years. Multiple reactors, commercial and military and one experimental that had no rods.

Yes we abandoned Fusion but the rest of your post is clipped garbage. There is no Fusion reactor within decades of break even and none likely over the horizon, your post tries to imply a few changes and they could make usable power, total garbage.

I am shamefully ignorant of the science of fusion tech but I am smart enough to understand the threat emanating from China by virtue of its technical education achievements that you starkly outline.

The need for these Chinese brains to compete with China certainly has to do with H1B visas. The need to control the threatening consequences to our national and commercial security of these visas, again respecting China, needs to be carefully monitored.

And wait until you try to get either technical support or a refund!

Thanks for telling me about the uranium blanket. Agreed pulsing would work.

1) Other than the obvious (low IQs about that of education majors), why does no-one in the press give more than a third-grade level explanation of thesevthings? This us the first I’d ever heard of controlled fusion-fission, though in retrospect it seems obvious.

2) What communist pedophole satanist saboteur was responsible for screwing the US nuclear industry? I’d figured out the opposition to nuclear power was designed to disarm the US of nuclear weapons over time, but given France (and now China, as you have related), we have no excuse, Trump should make this a priority rather than relying on 50-year-old or older designs and technology.

yes and they make really good bioweapons made from bat dna to kill millions upon million of people. Screw them. It sure would be horrible if their dam broke. I’d lose sleep. ( would sleep like a baby)

"Did it produce more energy than it consumed?"

No.

WEST Tokamak fusion reactor, Cadarache, southern France:

The biggest competitor to China's EAST is the smaller WEST at the Cadarache facility in southern France.
WEST is an international effort, including the US, and in May 2024 achieved 6 minutes at 50 million degrees.
One advantage of WEST is that it uses tungsten lining -- considered more suitable for commercial-scale fusion machines compared to graphite used by EAST.

WEST will eventually be superseded by a massive new fusion reactor, ITER, also internationally funded, and collocated with WEST in Cadarache, France.
ITER is about 100 times larger than WEST and 10 times larger than EAST.
ITER is intended to incorporate all of the lessons learned about nuclear fusion so far.
Construction began on ITER in 2010 and it's currently planned to be operational in 2039.

ITER will probably not generate more energy than it consumes.

For as long as I can remember, practical nuclear fusion was said to be possible within 20 years.
Now, some 50 years later, 20 years seems only 14 years away!

EAST fusion reactor, China:

The Bible teaches that the Antichrist’s empire will be located in Europe with its capital in Rome. I assume if anyone is going to get fusion right, or even come up with energy sources even better, it will be the Europeans.
