Eating a specific type of sugar can turbocharge cancers and make them more deadly, according to new research.
Fructose — which is added to thousands of US food and drinks — was found to speed up the growth of certain kinds of skin, breast and cervical tumors.
The study showed this type of sugar gets converted by the liver into components that tumors need to build new cells and grow.
The more quickly a tumor grows, the more aggressive the cancer may become - able to take over a person's body before they can fight back.
Added fructose is sugar that is extracted from sources like corn and added to processed foods, most commonly in the form of high fructose corn syrup.
Some early studies have suggested that eating more of these processed sugars might not just accelerate cancer growth, but could also be a cause of some kinds of cancer.
Added fructose is different from fruit fructose, a natural sugar found in fruits that is typically accompanied by fiber and other nutrients that slow down its absorption into the blood.
In the US, manufacturers are generally allowed to add fructose to foods without limitation, which means its found in high amounts in many different processed foods.
Similarly developed nations have issued caps on the additive — the EU only permits a fraction of the sugar in its processed foods.
This creates a food system in the US where fructose, and high fructose corn syrup, is found in sweetened items, like soda, fruit juice and yogurt, as well in unexpected items, like pasta sauce, salad dressing.

Oh wow, that’s something to really be concerned about now. We all know that kind of stuff isn’t natural and therefore not good for us anyway, but this takes it to a whole nother level.
Theres more to it than that.
This has a lot to do with the bullshit belief of economy of size and government support of integrated chain farming that turned farmers into slaves of the banks and processors like Tyson.
Once Tyson/JBS/etc get fed the legal dynamite they deserve family farms can return and those folks in Iowa can go back to being pig farmers with some say in their own futures.
I know of many people who drink several sugary drinks a day. I prefer just plain water.
[Press F to doubt.
HFCS has been in high use for over 50 years (and was touted as a healthy alternative to sugar by studies at the time!) and its consumption is actually down over the last 10 as many people have switched to diet alternatives or kicked it out of their diet altogether but cancer rates are still increasing overall.
Which isn’t to say that HFCS is good for you - just that this looks like another bad study with an agenda.]

It provided the author with fame and endless grants for almost 20 years. Every drug associated with this rabbit hole failed efficacy tests, wasting not just money, but close to two decades.
Because it makes the company a few cents more per sale.
My electrical engineering instructor said that the only real number has a dollar sign in front of it. (For the mathematically challenged there are such things as imaginary numbers and they are quite useful in electrical engineering.)
It doesn’t show up in Dukes mayonnaise. I think that those are fighting words in the south.
Oh for cryin’ out loud. What a nation of pansies.
Our parents smoked, drank, drove fast cars, owned guns, won WW2 and put men on the moon.
And fructose is going to kill us all. Pffftt.
.
The text is beyond reading by THIS scientist as well.
It’s highly-advanced organic chemistry.

That stuff is worse than Cyclamate."

There are doxens of articles about this for all reading levels.
Why does everyone have an apparently metaphysical inability to do simple internet searches?
If this hypothesis about fructose being a "cancer turbercharger" were true, then I would image that beekeepers and their families who have higher levels of fructose intake would be far more likely to die of these cancers. I know a lot of beekeepers, and that is certainly not my experience.
It’s so true. No one crosses big ag. A few years ago I remember a representative proposing a bill that big ag didn’t like. He never got another term.
Sugar is sugar. C6 H12 O6...Where it originates changes the name.
Table sugar is a mixture of sucrose and fructose. Both are still C6 H12 O6
It's a natural sugar found in fruit. It's how much of it you consume. More lobbyist paid government propaganda (see FDA "food triangle")
Try to find much not packed with the poison crap.
Only shop the outer walls of the supermarket. Everything in the middle is "ultra processed foods" as you say.
What do you think "keto" is all about?
Another good reason to cook from scratch.
bkmk fructose
+1
Added fructose is different from fruit fructose...
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nope, it’s chemically identical. Fructose is fructose. Yes it’s accompanied by fiber and nutrients when you eat fruit but the fructose itself is the same.
IMO all the hubbub about HFCS is overdone. The real problem isn’t the type of sugar but the amount. Americans are fat because they eat to much of everything but especially sugary and starchy carbs.
I’d like to see RFKJr. focus on the obesity epidemic. To me, everything else is secondary.
