A blast from the past!
1:05 VIDEO AT LINK.
I'd buy that !
We just paid $2000 for a new LG fridge that I hate..........
And one day, as Grandma had Grandpa take off his undershirt for the laundry, after he had just put it on. He said :
“Women - Can’t live with ‘em, can’t live without ‘em.”
He complied.
Most likely the defrost timer switch. All older fridges will eventually need one. Remember what it was, and the next time you can do it yourself. The next thing to go might be the icemaker. But, they are easy and cheap as well. Other than that, there isn't much else to break on an older fridge except the compressor itself. Everything else is pretty easy to fix.
There used to be co su.er advocate on television talking about programmed destruction and durability
Thanks for the info
Smart man. I’ve been living without for too long now and this is not the life I was planning on living.
No one has mentioned the electric bill savings from the new refrigerators, I wonder if they have measured the electricity cost of the old ones they have from the 1990s?
I got rid of a 1990s fridge that was nice because of the cost of running it (and the uncertainty of how much life was left). If I could buy that same fridge brand new knowing I would get 30 years from it then the extra cost to run it might be worth it, but spending an extra 7 to 9 dollars every month for the old fridge was not worth it.
And, when recalling old stories, he would state:
The memory of man runneth not to the contrary.
“They are better made and more reliable than the newer ones.”
and function better, esp. washers and dryers ...
I am still using the Rival crockpot made in the USA my mother-in-law gave for Christmas in 1976. My son took it with him when he left for his first job after University, and returned it to me when he needed a bigger one for his growing family.
I still use it quite a bit. My son is on his fourth crockpot made in China.
They cost more up front but they are made to used multiple times a day by people who are not happy if their stuff breaks down because it costs them money and customers.
LG is made for the home market with maybe four loads a week. If they break down the people that use them will fuss and whine but since they are not actively losing money if you can get the thing going again they are not that upset.
Buy commercial or off grid if you can. They are made not to need pampering. Of course, like I said, up front it will cost you.
My parents bought a refrigerator in 1965, and it was still working when my mother died three years ago. As far as I know, the people who bought her house are still using it!
We bought a new Speed Queen two years ago and love it, replaced a 35 year old Kenmore that finally gave up the ghost. The Speed Queen has a deep fill cycle and runs just like a washer made in the 1970s.
Really not much to a washer, one would think that over the past 50 years they could iron the kinks out and make one that lasts 30 years no problem.
Now with inflation/shrinkflation/continued outsourcing/education indoctrination/covid...
...it can/will only get worse going forward.
We have a backup battery that will run a refrigerator for several hours. We also have a deisel backup generator for longer blackouts.
We lost pretty much everything in a flood in October 2018. When we rebuilt, we tried to cover most contingencies. We looked into a whole house solar system with back up batteries, but the break even point on upfront costs exceeded our life expectancy.
I had a 1997 Ford 150 that was five feet under water (along with our house) in a flood in October 2018. My insurance company totaled it.I towed it to a shop to see if it could be salvaged, but it would have cost more to fix it than it was worth. All of the electronics were fried. I miss that truck.
Ever since I have been looking for a diesel truck that is pre-electronics (1970s or earlier) and still in good condition. Something I can convert to running on vegetable oil when the democrats make it illegal or cost prohibitive to buy gasoline or diesel.
“...it can/will only get worse going forward.”

In order to turn things around we would have to reverse the decades of cultural, ethical and moral rot and that’s not going to happen so yes, not looking good for us at all.
You’re quite correct. Defrost timer switch.
The fact my bar mini-fridge doesn’t have one may be why it has been running longer than most people I know have been alive.
A lot of the lousier performance can be laid at the doorstep of a federal government bureaucracy unconstitutionally forcing regulations and ‘mandates’ on manufacturers. JMHO.
Westinghouse ref/freezer in my garage works fine.
Bought in Nov 1964. Moved 5 times.
Turkey in the freezer. Horse medicines in the main part.
G E 1972 upright freezer in my kitchen—bought used from neighbor. Used every day.
