When my wife and I toured the Biltmore House, built in 1889-1895, it had ammonia refrigs.

And some steam headed piping to heat drying racks for laundry.

I told the guide that the Biltmore house was better than Disney Land (back before Disney Land went bad).

This is the only washing machine I would buy today:

https://speedqueen.com/products/top-load-washers/tc5003wn/

The other advice I would give is to buy your appliances from an actual appliance dealer who services the machines they sell. DO NOT BUY from Lowes & Home Depot or other big box retailers.

Here in southern NH most of the local dealers will ONLY service a machine IF you bought it from them. They are so busy with their own customers they do not have any time for the people who bought from the big box stores.

I have one of those new high tech friges. It makes the strangest noises. It sounds like a 60’s sci-fi sound effect machine!!!

These are industrial process controllers, that a competent technician should be able to connect in place of the stock thermostat. Hang on the outside or back of the fridge.................

Any gear head, hobby wood worker, or tinkerer with a garage probably has and old “beer fridge’ in the garage. Some of my friends still have the old absorbtion fridges with that nice handle that clicks the door closed. I have an LG in my shop and it works fine. But it replaced a fairly new <10 year old Kenmore. Who knows how long this LG lasts. It was on sale and it has an ice maker. If it wasn’t for the ice maker I would have just picked up another free fridge on the side of the road.

Lol … well, it was until the thermostat got uppity and stubborn … but, a good thump on the dial for an attitude adjustment gets it working again, though.

Other than replacing the cheap door cams that automatically close the doors, this is the only problem I’ve had with it in over 30 years since it was new.

And that really is cool! Like grandpa used to say, “they don’t make ‘em like they used to.” And that really is a shame.

The fridge from the ‘70s is in the garage as a backup for when the new one breaks. The old one hasn’t let us down yet.

I still have a light bulb that works from when my parents built the house in 1947.

My sister went through the exact same thing; her LG stopped working after less than 2 months. Repairman came and my BIL told him it was the compressor when the temp only got down to 50 deg after he "fixed" it. Tech said it takes 48 hours to regulate back to normal cooling temp (which everyone knows is BS) and made a hasty exit.

On the second visit, which took over a week to get them to show up, they wound up replacing the compressor and it worked for another 2 or 3 months. After that, they refused to service it, so at least you came out a lot better than she did, maybe... Good luck!

It’s a pretty simple part, just a temp controlled switch, but finding and/or making one that will work within the temperature parameters in that location is the challenge.

I found the generic, manufacturer’s part number for the OEM part and you can have them made new for less than a few dollars each in China … if you buy 500 - 1,000 minimum quantity.

So, now it’s a “one of these days I’m gonna fix that” project. The summer taming the yard chores and all the other home and yard improvement projects have taken over my time, energy and motivation for now. But … “one of these days, I am going to fix that.” No, really.

We knew a couple that bought one of those gargantuan new fridges that did everything. It went bezerk one night, and flooded the whole house, causing thousands of dollars in damage. They eventually sued and won!

I’ll keep my old Amana, thank you. After 20 years, it still works great. The ice-maker still works, too!

There are companies in AZ and TX that sell “obsolete” Freons like R-22. Ability Refrigerants is one. Search online for the “R-xyz” you need.
