A fiery debate has sparked after a cruise denied eight passengers to board the ship after they failed to make the 3 pm cut-off time.
The Norwegian Dawn ship left the tourists on an African island, some without their possessions after the private tour they were on ran late.
The group have now made their way by plane, ferry and car to Senegal, over 2,000 miles from São Tomé and Príncipe, where the Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) ship departed without them last Wednesday.
US couple Jill and Jay Campbell, who were among the abandoned eight cruisers have spent more than $7,000 in travel costs to get to the port in Senegal.
“We truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship follows, they follow those rules too rigidly,” Ms. Campbell told NBC’s the Today Show on Tuesday.

So they missed the Midnight Buffet?............
This has been happening for a very long time. They signed on to the rules and there are valid reasons for those rules due to contracted times for when the gangway needs to come up, berth needs to be cleared, tug timing, etc
Almost forgot: “Time, Tide, and Formation wait for no man!”
Seems as though the ship was still on the dock, silly not to let them board.
Have the cruise line hire a small boat to wait at the pier to pick up any late passengers and ferry them out to the cruise ship out to sea. At an inordinate price of course.
Cruise lines make it abundantly clear to be back on the ship ON TIME. Abundantly. She’s a complete idiot if she thinks “yes, they have rules but they follow them too rigidly”. That’s why they’re called RULES, idiot.
A rock in the middle of the ocean almost right on the equator.
What a place to lose a friend.
We’ve been on a LOT of cruises.... One of the things we enjoy the most is, sitting on our balcony, 30 minutes before departure, and watching all the “Pier Runners” trying to get back before the ship departs. Usually, they’re so drunk they can’t walk, much less run.
In this case, in Africa... with the Ship having been notified about the length of delay, I think the Captain should have made every effort to wait for them. But, there are limits to what he can do, and stay on schedule for the next port. That’s when they have to say, “Sorry”.
From what I’ve read, they COULD have waited.
Every tourist destination has at least a few who think the rules don’t apply to them.
The big is this: was the private tour affiliated with the cruise ship? Even if the cruise ship just recommended the tour, they might be liable.
“after the private tour they were on ran late. “
Does the ship advertise or recommend this private tour? If they do then they are liable.
Gee...bet most arrived early...only a doofus would think a ship would wait for them. Bet they’re real winners.
Dura lex, sed lex.
“”””Adam Glezer from Consumer Champion told news.com.au it was “ridiculous” the passengers, including a pregnant woman and someone who has a heart condition, weren’t allowed back on — even though the Norwegian Dawn was still at anchor and a São Tomé coastguard took the group on tenders to the vessel.”””
If this statement is true, the NCL ship was still anchored offshore at this tender port.
If the Captain refused to let them board after being transported by the local coast guard, then NCL deserves to be scolded.
8 passengers vs. thousands of other passengers.
I see no problem with them being left behind.
Das boot give zem da boot!................
No, and some think that’s why the cruise ship made an example of them, to discourage passengers from doing tours with unaffiliated parties.
