Researchers announced Thursday that the timeline of Greece’s history needs to be pushed back by at least a quarter million years after a shocking discovery deep inside an open coal mine.
Archaeologists uncovered the nation’s oldest archaeological site, which dates back at least 700,000 years. It is thought to be associated with some of our earliest hominin ancestors, according to The Associated Press. Although older archaeological sites have been uncovered in other parts of Europe, Asia and Africa, this is the first major discovery of this age in Greece, and may completely rewrite aspects of the nation’s human history.
The site contained rough stone tools from the Lower Palaeolithic period, roughly 3.3 million to 300,000 years ago, The AP noted. The remains of extinct creatures, such as giant deer, elephants, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, and macaque monkeys, were also found at the site.
More work is needed to determine the exact date, “however, [archaeologists] will not be able to be sure until hominin fossil remains are recovered,” the project director Panagiotis Karkanas said, according to The AP. “(The site) is the oldest currently known hominin presence in Greece, and it pushes back the known archaeological record in the country by up to 250,000 years.”
For example, in February 2023, a discovery in southern France suggested that humans began hunting in the region some 45,000 to 42,000 years ago. Further analysis of the Greek site could push this date back by hundreds of thousands of years.
The area where the tools were discovered has long been linked to ancient Greek legends, such as that of an ancient race of giants who fought the gods of Olympus, The AP noted. Ancient writers even described the area as the site of a major supernatural war.
I used to be a amateur but now I am a pro-crastinator.............
God must have gotten a chuckle out of omitting giant sloths, but including all kinds of bears and large cats.
Excellent! The next meeting is, uh, oh, they haven’t set the date yet. And I haven’t installed the calendar app...
Sounds like our zoo...IIRC there was a big one in Iraq when we were there.
“ How did Noah collect the kangaroos in Australia? ”
That was done via a Zoom meeting.
Marsupials were once present on every continent. The only living remnant are the opossums today, but there were others in the past.
So instead we might ask “why did the kangaroos only survive in Australia?”
I’ll have to watch those later. Thanks for the info, though!
My guess would be they hopped on board , besides the Bible told me so.
We have elephants, hippos, monkeys, rhinos and sloths so God didn’t forget anything. Just like dogs they come in all different sizes. Mocking Gods Word is not something you want to do. He hasn’t told us everything obviously but He is God and Noah did happen.
I am a Christian and I believe the Bible. However, I also believe that much of the Bible, especially the old testament, is more allegory than history.
There is a lot of evidence that "Noah's" flood actually occurred, but it was only in the "known" world of the Mediterranean basin. A land dam at the straits of Dover gave away, and flooded the Mediterranean sea, burying many ancient cultures that lived around the old shoreline.
This ain’t me doing my usual snark but asking a question for realzies.
Didn’t the ancient Greeks write about a people in that area that was there before them? The Pelasgis (or however it’s spelled)?
I recall reading something about how the Greeks credited them with teaching how to build large stone walls and such.
We’ve had floods since the beginning of time. That’s not a big deal. A really, really big boat with two “reproducing” mates of every species on earth? Pleeeeez...
Herodotus credits the Phoenicians with the introduction of alphabetic writing. Prior to that, the use of Linear B (Greek), Linear A (non-Greek, probably Carian or related language), and perhaps even cuneiform (the writing system used for international diplomatic and possibly commercial communication for thousands of years) was around for a long period.
The Pelasgians are referred to in ancient writing, but there’s no clear idea who they were. I’m not one to say they never existed, it seems likely that they were an earlier coat of paint — or more than one — and probably also Indo-European speakers.
just showing your ass with that comment... maybe I should have told that most dating of these finds is the use of the “mud” line in the earth’s crust .
A lot of place names in Greece are pre-Greek: Athens, Corinth, Knossos, Parnassos, etc. There are also many loan words in Greek which seem to come from the same language. One of them is plinthos, "brick," which may indicate that the Greeks learned how to build with bricks from the earlier population.
Like we should believe any institution after all the lies they’ve told. Just go get vaccinated.
go climb back into your bottle,,,, bye
"Noah?"
"NOAH!"
"What?"
"It's the Lord, Noah."
"Riiiight"
"Noah, how long can you tread water?"
