NATIONAL GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH DAY

Each year, National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day on April 12th recognizes one of the top comfort foods in the United States. Why wouldn’t it be when we’re talking about bread grilled to perfection, and warm, gooey, melted cheese.

#GrilledCheeseSandwichDay

According to food historians, many cultures around the world have enjoyed cooked bread and cheese since ancient times. The United States modern version of the grilled cheese sandwich originated in the 1920s. As sliced bread and American cheese became easily available, Americans began making open-faced grilled cheese sandwiches.

United States government cookbooks describe Navy cooks broiling “American cheese filling sandwiches” during World War II.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are versatile thanks to the ability to mix and match cheeses, bread, and seasonings. Adding sauteed vegetables or herb-infused oils can elevate this simple comfort food to a whole other level.

That is moving a lot! All of our moves were in Florida. Dad was in the insurance business for a while. Then he tried a couple of other ventures. Almost successful with one, but successful with the next. The thing I missed was not getting to say goodbye to friends. It always seemed sudden to me, though I know now that’s not really how it was. Just a kid’s misperception.

There is a la Madeleine in the New Orleans French Quarter. At Jackson Square, next to St. Louis Cathedral.

That’s where I’ve seen it! I knew it sounded familiar. Didn’t eat there when we went, but it looked like a good place to try.

It’s a fabulous place where I used to go for brunch after morning Mass when I lived there. Btw, whether or not you’re Catholic, the St. Louis Cathedral choir often features evening performances, especially in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Those high soprano voices inside the Cathedral’s acoustics-— ah! It’s truly what the angels in heaven must sound like.

Next time we go to NOLA, we’ll have to check out both of these. Thanks for the tip!

Amish cheese made in Mexico? That sounds very unusual to me.

I can see the possibility, but I wasn’t feeling adventurous. I went with butter and lots of it.
