Earth hit by intense blast of energy that's 'unlike any we have seen before'

In December 2021, a massive blast of energy hit the Earth’s atmosphere. Its source was a gamma-ray burst – one of the most powerful explosions in the universe – but not just any gamma ray burst.

One scientist said at the time that the event – named GRB 211211A – “looks unlike anything else we have seen before

The event was detected in December 2021 by NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The gamma-ray burst was significantly longer than average, which might normally suggest it had been produced by the collapse of a massive star into a supernova.

But several clues, in particular the unusually high proportion of infra-red light, hinted that this was no ordinary supernova.

A study recently published in scientific journal Nature explains that the massive wave of energy had come from a kilonova.

These comparatively rare cosmic events – which normally last far less than a minute – are the result of a collision between two ultra-dense neutron stars. They produce heavier elements such as gold and platinum.

***Was this like the Carrington Event***

No. Gamma rays you hope come from far distant solar systems, even different galaxies. They have the potential to wipe out life on earth.

The 'Carrington Event' was a natural solar electromagnetic pulse (EMP)... an unusually strong one but a natural solar event notwithstanding. A single nuclear detonation high in the atmosphere over the center of North America can cause massive electronic and electrical failures - an act of war, but a regional event.

A solar flare, a magnetic eruption of our own sun - if powerful enough and aimed right at earth - can disrupt events all over the world plus knock out satellites. The solar flare of the Carrington Event apparently hit most directly on Canada; the only electrical infrastructure of the time was telegraph, run by batteries, but the regional wiring system of the telegraph acted as a huge antenna. It magnified the EMP of the solar flare and even melted some of the wires.

I carry a very nice towel with me on all my daily jaunts, so I’m not really too concerned about this issue.
