Man Born in 1846 Talks About the 1860s and Fighting in the Civil War - Restored Audio
The Library of Congress ^ | Jul 10, 2022 | Julius Franklin Howell (January 17, 1846 - June 19, 1948)

Posted on 07/18/2022 1:02:13 PM PDT by Dr. Franklin

Recording made in 1947 when he was 101 years old as an oral history of the American Civil War, (or the War Between the States, as it is known in South). This man joined the 24th Virginia Calvary in 1862 at the age of 16 and and half. He was eventually taken prisoner in the Spring of 1965 at what must have been the Battle of Hillsman's House since her refers to Gen. Ewell's surrender. He was held at Point Lookout, Maryland until the end of the war.

He is quite emphatic that the South didn't fight for "the preservation or extension of slavery", but for states rights. When he begins by reminiscing about the "early 50's", he was, of course, referring to the 1850's.

The vast majority of people fighting for the CSA did NOT own slaves. That was merely the result of the “Victor writing the history books.”

That, plus the fact, that ol’ Abe needed to reason to get the Northern States to care enough to fight. Up until 1863, even the Northern States were inclined to let the South go, much as we would be inclined to let California go if they so wished.

That only makes sense.
There was a small percentage that owned slaves.
They could not make enough to staff an army, not even close.

Some people take a long time to get all the forms filled out.

The Civil War was a different period in time.

Trains used to get loaded up with hardtack, salt pork and coffee to get delivered to the soldiers on the front.

Dental hygiene was virtually non-existent.

Whiskey rations were officially two to four ounces per soldier per day. But quite often, entire canteens were liberally filled with whisky - in order to give soldiers a little "courage" to get themselves to the front lines.

And, the Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in land the Union did not control. It didn’t free slaves in any of the northern states (such as Delaware and Kentucky) either. Some have speculated that it may have been intended to not only seize the issue but also to possibly foment a slave rebellion in the south.

Victors do indeed write the history books.

I’ve seen this and enjoyed it, however, the man was obviously a white supremacist and a racist. We should dig him up and scatter his bones, like Lincoln Brigade did to nuns and priests during the Spanish civil war.

To quote my Aunt Clara (from Thomaston, GA):

“The War between the states (Civil War) didn’t have a damn thing to do with slavery. It was about the price of a bail of cotton.

This revisionist crap has been debunked many times. The CSA themselves said the war was about chattel slavery. Somehow 21st-century conservatives want to latch on to the evil confederacy as some allegory to what is happening now. You people need to get better role models. The CSA was nothing more than a collection of pompous southern oligarchs, and semi retarded dirt poor whites who keep slavery going. Lee should have been hung and his body been torn apart by dogs in the DC gutter. The stars and bars are a national embrassment, much like Nazism is for Germans today.

Except, those very same Southern states required a slave state be made and admitted as any free state would be admitted. This was even if that state did not want slaves.

No, it was for the choice of slaves that the South fought. Period. They claim it was “state's rights,” but the only one that mattered to them was slavery.

While we’re at it, we may as well recognize that there were 4 slave states that did not secede, and name the other two: Maryland (yes, THAT Maryland) and West Virginia which seceded from Virginia to remain with the union much the same as I would suspect Inland and Southern California to secede from California if the latter decided to break away.

When the war was about states rights, the south was winning. When the war was made about a man’s rights, the north began winning. After the Emancipation Proclamation, the north gained the moral high ground. Frederick Douglas was correct about that, and if Abraham Lincoln didn’t listen to him, the north would have lost.
