The vast majority of people fighting for the CSA did NOT own slaves. That was merely the result of the “Victor writing the history books.”

That, plus the fact, that ol’ Abe needed to reason to get the Northern States to care enough to fight. Up until 1863, even the Northern States were inclined to let the South go, much as we would be inclined to let California go if they so wished.

That only makes sense.
There was a small percentage that owned slaves.
They could not make enough to staff an army, not even close.

To quote my Aunt Clara (from Thomaston, GA):

“The War between the states (Civil War) didn’t have a damn thing to do with slavery. It was about the price of a bail of cotton.

This revisionist crap has been debunked many times. The CSA themselves said the war was about chattel slavery. Somehow 21st-century conservatives want to latch on to the evil confederacy as some allegory to what is happening now. You people need to get better role models. The CSA was nothing more than a collection of pompous southern oligarchs, and semi retarded dirt poor whites who keep slavery going. Lee should have been hung and his body been torn apart by dogs in the DC gutter. The stars and bars are a national embrassment, much like Nazism is for Germans today.

Yep.

We went to Gettysburg and there is a plaque that states the north fought the South because the South wanted to keep slaves.

Lies.

Makes sense…

Slavery was legally practiced in the northern states before, during, and after the civil war.

The emancipation proclamation was directed only at the confederate states, excluding certain parishes in Louisiana, that were loyal to the union.

I’ve read first hand accounts from the militia my ancestors fought and died with. While slavery wasn’t the reason to start, they just needed one look at it and it became their cause.

Every individual has their own reason. By 1863 or so, I imagine everyone in the country knew someone killed or maimed in the war. That type of personal involvement supersedes any of the “learned” debate you read on FR. You fight to stop the other guy who killed your cousin/friend/brother.

I laugh when the “civil war perfessers” on FR spout their grand reasons.
