The Texas shooting shows the futility of arming teachers
MSNBC ^ | May 25, 2022 | Zeeshan Aleem

Hardcore opponents of gun control in the U.S. often respond to school shootings by proposing to arm teachers or add armed security guards to schools. But the inability of police to stop the gunman at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, before he killed at least 19 children and two teachers Tuesday exposes the poor reasoning behind that proposal.

While all the details of the shooting are not yet clear, authorities’ accounts revealed that the gunman was confronted by multiple armed police officers — yet they were unable to stop him before he killed nearly two dozen people.

The gunman reportedly crashed his truck in a ditch near the campus before entering the school, and police officers arrived at the school after a report of that crash.

According to CBS News’ summary of Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Christopher Olivarez’s account, the shooter “stormed Robb Elementary School in the small city of Uvalde shortly after crashing his car in the area and immediately engaged in gunfire with state troopers on the scene. The gunman shot several police officers and then locked himself in a classroom.”

-snip

According to various reports, after local officers called for backup, a specialized tactical unit made it into the classroom a full hour after the gunman entered the school, and an agent of an elite law enforcement unit was involved in killing the gunman. (That agent was injured in the process.)

Given those details, I find it increasingly impossible to understand how one could believe that the solution to school shootings is arming teachers or having a security guard protecting every school. If a group of police officers couldn’t stop a shooter, then why would we expect an individual teacher or security guard to do better?

Unarmed staff and police outside waiting for 40 minutes.

What’s coming out today is the futility of arming cops.

Apparently the fact that an overwhelming number of mass shootings, occur in Gun Free Zones, is somehow escaping this “journalist “

The students and teachers had no means to defend themselves, let alone to actively fight back. And DEMs never fail to side with criminals, over innocent bystanders, because …. White supremacy or something

If you take guns out of the school, the bad guys can get them and have more.

If you put more guns in school, that’s less for the bad guys.

I can deflect too.

So it’s O.K. for LEOs to have AR-15’s, but not citizens?

He doesn't understand why having armed responders in the school at all times is better than having cops waiting around outside for an hour for the SWAT guys to show up? He is either incredibly dense or lying because politics is more important to him than school safety. (Spoiler: it's the second one)

If you arm teachers, killers can access the guns already in the school by disarming the teacher who wouldn’t shoot anyway

From the article - “accounts revealed that the gunman was confronted by multiple armed police officers” THAT WERE OUTSIDE IN THE PARKING LOT.

I also believe that they were out there quite a while too.

They are getting ahead of what’s coming:

If the place had armed security, secure visitor check-in, and a completely fenced perimeter, how did an armed transgender freak with two long guns get past all of that?

1. Locking the door on the classroom would have at least set the shooter up in the empty hall. (In Japan, the doors are locked from the outside and no interruptions are permitted during the class session)

2. Three of six identified the shooter and did nothing. Gun laws aren’t going to alter the fact that none of the security in place did anything.

3. Police waited until an off-duty BP agent took it upon himself with NO BACKUP despite the 100 so cops that were on-scene to storm the classroom himself and kill the shooter.

That’s an ugly amount of reality to deal with if you are trying to leverage this to take away 2A.

Wow. I hope you forgot your sarc tag.

For the most part, only teachers who WOULD shoot would seek to carry a firearm.

We should abolish the secret service by that logic. And get rid of city bank guards.

I like this answer. Isreal has no problem with guns in schools and shopping malls Etc.

The startling thing is that the author of this piece is not wrong about the vast majority of teachers who would shoot themselves in the foot while wetting their pants it this were to happen in their school. They could be exempt from any requirement to have a weapon.

But there are a few teachers who would rather be armed and have a fighting chance at survival for themselves and their students. These are the only teachers who should be considered for training and arming.

Oh yeah, I forgot:

4. The cops on-scene DID enter the school to retrieve THEIR OWN KIDS while the shooting was occurring.

So, by all means, when seconds count, the cops who are minutes away are going to stand outside while the rapist is raping you and then killing you and then finally leaves the house.

So to be clear, the staff at the school was not armed and this somehow proves that arming the staff wouldn't have helped.

Makes perfect sense...if you're an idiot.

Wrong. This is a deliberate attempt to obfuscate the issue and give their NPC’s something to drool over.

And the back door to the school was not locked. If you have a kid in school it’s just a given you cannot enter through an open back door.
