What the hell is wring with "popcorn" ceilings?
HGTV and all the fixer upper channels | 3/25/22 | dallasbiff

I've been watching the fixer upper shows, and I don't get the hatred of "popcorn ceilings".

We had a popcorn ceiling in 1968.

Besides being ugly, they drop themselves on the floor. They are impossible to paint also.

Nothing wrong with them if you're a drywall finisher. That texture hides a lot and saves a whole lot of upside down sanding.

If you wait long enough it will become the hot home improvement again.

Mostly, they are out of style. Removing provides contractor jobs

Today’s high end stoves have giant red knobs which don’t coordinate with most people’s kitchens. Makes no sense other than oooh! look we’ve got an over the top stove that costs more than yours.

At least avocado appliances didn’t have to be constantly cleaned of finger smudges like stainless does.

It will be interesting to see when the latest fads start falling out of favor - all the ‘open concept’ gymnasium houses with their white-n-gray farmhouse chic will be mocked unmercifully.

And then everyone will go running off to spend half the value of the property to put up new walls, wood floors and bold color palettes. And wallpaper - bet your bitcoin, those house decorating jacklegs will bring back wallpapers.

Hey, I sleep on a 40-year-old water bed every night. We’ve replaced the mattress about 4 times over the years, but it’s sooo much cheaper than a regular mattress and super comfy!

I’m late to the party but had to comment. Popcorn ceilings are nice at cutting down glare but are terrible dust cartchers especially if you live in warm climates with open doors and windows. Try cleaning a popcorn ceiling around a ceiling fan without getting a snowfall effect.

After many years the little white things fall down all over the furniture your floors etc. It’s a mess all the time I despise them.

I’m fine with popcorn ceilings and had the sparkly ones when I was a kid.

Surprised no one has mentioned the stalactite ceilings. Those are creepy scary.

Can’t stand Chip and Joanna and not going to fork over money to watch their new channel. Has he washed that nasty greasy hair the past couple years?

SMH at new stone counter tops getting ripped out. There is a granite monolith mountain near here. Well, there used to be. It’s been leveled for counter tops and bathroom showers. New owners rip it out and the monolith is now creating a new but ugly monolith at the dump. People were begging city hall to stop it disappearing but were told it’d last another 100 years. Twenty years later, it’s gone.

White subway tile should have stayed in the subways and dirty gas station restrooms. It’s cheap and ugly.

No worries. Home Depot has popcorn ceiling in a can for those who want to do their own repair or touch up.

They’re ugly, you can’t paint them, and when you look at them sideways the crap flakes off and makes a mess. And they’re basically only used in apartments, so they scream cheap.

From what I recalled, popcorn ceilings started getting popular where I grew up (New England) as a quick fix to hide cracks in older ceilings, just as cheap wood paneling was used to cover cracked and broken walls.

I have since associated it with cheap cover ups. When we built a home in northern Illinois, I paid more for a normal ceiling. It turns out that popcorn ceilings can be spray painted, and normal ceilings have to be painted normally.

That said, popcorn ceilings absorb noise a bit better,

Oh, and I now live in an older home with a textured ceiling, and paint crumbs regular fall onto my computer desk.
