What the hell is wring with "popcorn" ceilings?
HGTV and all the fixer upper channels | 3/25/22 | dallasbiff

I've been watching the fixer upper shows, and I don't get the hatred of "popcorn ceilings".

I hate orange peel walls. For one thing, they dull the paint (which some might like, I guess). Also, it takes much more paint to cover them than with a smooth wall.

The up side is that they can disguise a multitude of sins that are blatant on a smooth wall.

“If you’re talking about textured ceilings?”

All popcorn ceilings are “textured” — because they have ... texture.

Not all textured ceilings are popcorn, however. Many different ways to texture a ceiling and some are very nice.

They’re ugly and you can’t wash them so they end up looking horrid.

I don’t know if that helps but there you go.

The early formulation of the “popcorn” contained asbestos. The asbestos content in the material that was the problem. The application also hid a lot of poor workmanship by the drywall installers, like wavy ceilings. Painting over the popcorn took gallons of extra paint to get the job completed.

Yep, I have had popcorn ceilings. Never again.

It’s overused. Every house had it at one time.

When combined with low ceilings, the air vents often are close to the ceiling and over time the dust blowing out of the vent sticks to the popcorn in a dirty fan type shape on the ceiling that is impossible to clean.

99% of the “going in or out of style” in home decor or fashion is generated by the industry to churn sales. Same in Wall Street where the big brokerages pump out alternative fear or greed to churn portfolios and generate commissions.

The youngest played with the bidet, turning it into a fountain and washed a foot wide circle off the ceiling. Couldn’t repair it properly. That’s why I hate the stuff

If you could have gotten a little more spray reach your problems would have been solved.

And if the bathtub or sink upstairs leaks, part, but not all, of the popcorn texture will fall off, leaving you with a scabby ceiling. The stuff you buy at Home Depot will not fix it; it only makes it worse. And the Youtube advice to spray the textured ceiling with water to soften it up for removal is a joke if it’s been painted more than a couple of times.

I am sure that is part of it, but some styles just don’t stand the test of time, while others are timeless. It’s the same with fashion. When it comes to popcorn ceilings and sag carpeting, I honestly think it’s mostly a “clean” issue. Both get really really nasty over time in most places.

Have I seen a few well maintained homes that looks fine with both? Yes! and it’s sort of shocking, because it can catch you off guard to see a new “clean” version of it. Because it usually looks like a asthma starter kit.

A popcorn ceiling hides an old patched ceiling so you can sell the house. Texture on ceilings start with smooth which requires a perfect sheet rock install. As time goes by, or for non perfect sheet rock install it’s textured depending on how much imperfections to hide. Then old patched, leaked ceiling get popcorn.

True, 99% is hyperbole but so many people are just sheep. If the “in thing” was to walk around with a cow pie on your head, 50% would do so. I always tell the kids and grandkids, “Be eagles, not sheep. Eagles don’t do the group herd thing.”
