ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WSPA) – Asheville Police will no longer be sending officers to respond to certain calls because of a shortage of officers, the department said in a release Wednesday.
The department reports it’s lost 84 officers since the start of last year.
“We have an agency that has provided services at a high level for a long time, but the circumstances have come to pass that we don’t have the staffing to maintain that level of service,” said Deputy Chief of Police Mike Yelton.
The department said it’s no longer responding to crimes including thefts under $1,000 where there is no suspect information, vehicle break ins where there is no suspect information, “minimal damage and/or graffiti” where there is no suspect info, and reports of fraud, scams and identity theft.
“Our primary responsibility is to maintain a staff of officers that are available to respond to the most severe calls,” Yelton said.
Victims of crimes to which police no longer respond can still file reports online, but 7News is told there’s no guarantee they’ll be investigated, as the investigative unit is down 50 percent of its personnel.
Some city residents are concerned.

This will be a goldmine for insurance fraudsters. When the “victim” of a vehicle break in, vandalism, etc. gets to write their own police report, it’s like a virtual ATM for people that need quick cash from their insurance company.

In the near future, 9-1-1, whats your emergency? Is this a predominantly black neighborhood? It is? We’ll send a black officer there next wednesday , is between 10-4 ok for you? Will you or someone else be home? The other alternative is to call your local BLM chapter and let them know whats going on, Im sure they have a good program to deal with this situation. . /S.

Asheville had been a great place to visit for years. Great scenery and restaurants. My kids used to dance up there at Shindig on the Green for 7-8 years. You could see the place go downhill over time. The hippies moved in and took over downtown. The “woke” crowd got elected and enjoy destroying the place from within as well.
Asheville wants to be the Austin of the east. The wife and I love that area of NC so much we considered retiring there. Maybe five years ago we spent time checking out the city. Way too “bohemian” for me even then.

The more dangerous the neighborhood, the less they should be involved. No reason to put their lives in danger for communities that don’t want them there.
My daughter moved there a couple of weeks ago due to a job offer. Says it’s pretty, but way too weird for her.

And given that the insurance industry is quite adept at protecting itself, it won’t be long before the agencies make ‘adjustments’.
But I guarantee they will respond if someone is forced to defend themselves from the democrat party’s paramilitary force of antifa or blm.
