Astronomy Picture of the Day - A Venus Flyby

Explanation: On a mission to explore the inner heliosphere and solar corona, on July 11, 2020 the Wide-field Imager on board NASA's Parker Solar Probe captured this stunning view of the nightside of Venus at distance of about 12,400 kilometers (7,693 miles). The spacecraft was making the third of seven gravity-assist flybys of the inner planet. The gravity-asssist flybys are designed to use the approach to Venus to help the probe alter its orbit to ultimately come within 6 million kilometers (4 million miles) of the solar surface in late 2025. A surprising image, the side-looking camera seems to peer through the clouds to show a dark feature near the center known as Aphrodite Terra, the largest highland region on the Venusian surface. The bright rim at the edge of the planet is nightglow likely emitted by excited oxygen atoms recombining into molecules in the upper reaches of the atmosphere. Bright streaks and blemishes throughout the image are likely due to energetic charged particles, and dust near the camera reflecting sunlight. Skygazers from planet Earth probably recognize the familiar stars of Orion's belt and sword at lower right.

Such a shame that Venus is so inhospitable.

It is much closer to the size of Earth than is Mars.

I read one of the reasons it is soinhospitable is the lack of a large moon. Oh Mon has a huge effect on he biosphere

It is interesting how different Earth and Venus are.

The women of Venus are hiding. They are very clever in making it look like it is so inhospitable.

Old movie about Venus you linked....
I skipped ahead, I admit.

Like watching a science lesson show on National Geographic. Sort of. Educational.

Did the atmospheric conditions cause almost all the women’s hair to turn blonde (except for one redhead)? And do bare midriffs help them to cope with the temperatures?

Remember when they were saying that they had found life in the clouds of Venus about a month ago?
Well it turns out it wasn’t life at all.
Turns out it was just Sulfur Dioxide.....
What a joke.....

Mars has such a thin atmosphere because it lacks a magnetic field, the solar wind from a distant (relative to the Earth-Sun distance) Sun stripped away most of its atmosphere.

Compare to Venus, which is much closer to the Sun and therefore is blasted with a much stronger solar wind, Venus has a hugely thick atmosphere, and also lacks a magnetic field.

Extra points for anyone that can spot the incongruity...

No magnetic field on either planet.

Lack of a magnetic field allows the solar wind to strip off the atmosphere of one of those planets.

The other planet has a very thick atmosphere.

Is it the planet furthest from the Sun, or the planet much closer that gets 4 times the solar wind flux?

Identify the planet, and explain why....
