As many as one in five Londoners had syphilis by their mid-30s during the late 18th century, according to a detailed new study on the sexually transmitted infection (STI) and its spread in the capital of the United Kingdom.
Researchers used data from hospital admissions and workhouse infirmaries to reach their figures, making allowances for duplicate records, private treatments, and the possibility of syphilis numbers getting mixed in with other diseases like gonorrhea or chlamydia. The findings show a much higher incidence in London than elsewhere in the country at the time other studies show 'the pox' was half as prevalent in the city of Chester, and up to 25 times less common in rural parts of England and Wales during the late 1700s.

sung to the tune of the Beetles yesterday....
Syphilis- it only started with a simple kiss...
Now it hurts to even take a piss...
Oh how did i get syphilis??
Leprosy- all my skin is falling off of me...
I’m not half the man i used to be...
Oh how did i get leprosy??
Remember the movie Dr. Ehrlich’s Magic Bullet (1940) and how everyone at the upper class dinner table gasped and went into shock when he said his next target was syphilis?
Didn’t see it? You missed a good one I saw 58 years ago on TV and still remember it.
Syphilis was the AIDS of its day.
Then penicillin came along, and people could sleep around without acquiring a fatal disease.
Naturally, AIDS came along and ended the period of being able to safely be promiscuous.
If we develop a cure for AIDS, something new will come along.
LOL!
I can’t imagine a world without great works such as “The Abduction of Figaro” and “Oedipus Tex”
Mercury was used to cure it, hence the quip “A night on Venus, a month on Mercury.”
Beatles
England was also very busy fighting to hold on to much more valuable India during the Revolutionary War. I don’t know how much that might have changed by 1812. In addition, French were our allies in the RW. By 1812, they were full bore Napoleon marching on Moscow, and had no spare energy to help America.
I wonder how many young non-maskers are spreading Covid the fun way? Also has Covid been found in semen or vaginal fluid?
For later
Heck even the lower classes engaged in wife selling and it was perfectly legal.
Got to make ends meat...
Nope.Nope.Nope.
Where did they wear the mask for that one???
“Lets see.....Lots of Englishmen going around the world and coming back to London.”
Syphilis was unknown in Europe until shortly after the voyages of Columbus, which led to the belief that it was a New World disease.
“The British mocked the colonists as a bunch of religious bible-thumpers because we were morally strict for the times.”
Evidently they hadn’t met Ben Franklin.
In reality lot of colonial Americans might embarrass their modest descendents of today.
At least the ones outside of the joyless Puritan re-education camp up in New England, who even found celebrating Christmas to be too carnal to be permitted.
Caribbean was much more important money wise than North America, all because of the sugarcane.
Even without a cure, there’s drugs now that suppress HIV to the point that it’s hard to detect if someone has it, not to mention suppression of the disease progression. So we already have a license to be promiscuous even without totally curing HIV. As for syphilis, we have versions of syphilis that are resistant to antibiotics, brought on by promiscuous people getting infected multiple times by syphilis.
