Scientists are preparing for a potential close encounter of the viral kind.
Researchers say that when humans return from a planned visit to Mars in the 2030s, theyll have to quarantine because rock samples from the Red Planet could be as dangerous as Ebola even if the likelihood they are is low.
Rockets returning from Mars will have to undergo a chemical cleaning involving intense heat as well.

OK, so should we send the samples to Wuhan for analysis?

Which is why we need a Moon base first.
Leave the samples there for robots to examine.
Otherwise risk the Earth.

Actually, the entire Earth is. Martian material is easier to find in Antarctica because is stands out.

The whole premise of the story is ridiculous. Everything living on earth is the surviving end product of 3.8 billion year-old, no-holds-barred, death match in environments can be as extreme as anything found on Mars. Any virus in clump of rock from a desiccated and dead world would have no chance.
The true story would be Virus from Mars makes an appearance and gets eaten by nearly everything.

Why would there be viruses on a planet without any biological hosts???? This worry does seem a little silly, doesn't it? Viruses evolved here on earth. An extraterrestrial organism have RNA similar to ours is rather farfetched.

Why would there be viruses on a planet without any biological hosts????Maybe they are waiting for the rocks to turn into people. According to one theory I've heard, that has happened and probably will again. /sarc

Why would there be viruses on a planet without any biological hosts???? Some scientists have theorized that there were viruses on the Earth before there were biologicals.

Its unlikely a virus could last long in a near vacuum, without a host and bombarded by UV and cosmic rays for several billion years.
I still remember when I was in college.
All the “journalism” majors took Geology 101 for their “Science Elective” because it was the easiest one to pass.
I took it because I was considering going into Petroleum Engineering.
Decided on Electronics instead.
