Direct evidence of Neanderthal fibre technology and its cognitive and behavioral implications

With a few exceptions such as the Schöningen spears and the recent finds of wooden tools at Pogetti Vecchi, almost all of our knowledge about the Middle Paleolithic comes from durable materials (bones and stone tools). We know from observations of our own surroundings, ethnographic and ethnohistoric accounts that most of the material culture of humans (and Neanderthals) is comprised of perishable materials... Obviously, differential preservation of materials contributes to this bias. Previously, researchers have demonstrated that the microenvironment immediately surrounding a stone tool can preserve microscopic fragments of what is otherwise invisible archaeologically. This is also true for the preservation of a 3-ply cordage fragment adhering to a stone tool (flake) from Abri du Maras (Fig. 1)....

Raman spectra analysis exhibits several bands characteristic of cellulose... The weaker presence of lignin is also attested to by the band at 1602 cm-1. Several micro-analyses were performed at different locations on the cord sample and yielded the same spectral signature illustrated in Fig. 5. Analyses focused outside the cord sample did not exhibit an organic substance signature. These results confirm that the molecular nature of these residues is consistent with an interpretation of wood components. Spectra from modern Quercus and Juniperus are included as examples of hardwood and softwood respectively. Note that the peaks match, but that obviously the Maras sample has been degradated. The proportions of lignin and cellulose vary according to wood species and in particular between hardwood (angiosperms) and softwood (gymnosperms, including conifers). Holocellulose (cellulose and hemicellulose) is the main component of woods with the proportions varying between 65-80% for softwood and between 70-90% for hardwood, the remainder consisting mainly of lignin. Cellulose is typically more sensitive to degradation than lignin, with generally low cellulose content in archaeological samples.

If fiber technology is a measure of IQ my wife is Einstein.

World's Oldest Spears

"Radiocarbon dating has confirmed that three wooden spears found in a coal mine in Schöningen, near Hannover, Germany, are the oldest complete hunting weapons ever found. Some 380,000 to 400,000 years old, the six- to 7.5-foot javelins were found in soil whose acids had been neutralized by a high concentration of chalk near the coal pit."

What was the bandwidth of their fibre? Maybe its not in the glass but the solid state stuff.

I distinctly remember reading in the daily readfile when I was stationed overseas in 1979 that the Army at Fort Knox was testing fibre technology for durability by running tanks over the cables. And the truth finally comes out now that it was fibre technology from forty thousand years ago? Amazing!

Did you realize you can re-arrange the letters in Neanderthals to produce Netherlaands? I wonder if there’s a conspiracy theory lurking somewhere in there?

So Cain slew Able (world’s 1st born, brothers), then went out into the boonies and hooked up some gal. Who was she? Who was she and Cain’s offspring? Neandethals? Some other lineage/

My pet theory is that the Neanderthals don’t show up until Genesis 6. “ There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”

Yeah. No.

. Who was she?

His younger sister.

Who was she and Cain’s offspring?

People who built cities.

Neandethals?

Haven't seen any Neanderthal cities yet but since they were just humans could be.

Isn’t differentiating Neanderthals from Homo Sapiens racist?

Genesis 6:1
And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

Genesis 6:2
that the sons of God [Neanderthals] saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.

Genesis 6:4
There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God [Neanderthals came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

I might be biased because I have nearly 4% Neanderthal DNA which is real outlier amount which is greater than 99% of 23andme customers. After all who wouldn’t wanna be like the “mighty men who were of old, men of renown.”

It should be pointed out that the radiocarbon limit is about 50K years, and that either the RC level was zero and another method was used, or a radiometric method other than RC dating was used.
