DALLAS - A former Dallas police officer who fatally shot an unarmed man in his apartment was found guilty of murder by a Dallas County jury on Tuesday.
Guyger was off-duty but still in uniform after a long shift when she shot Botham Jean, a 26-year-old accountant from the Caribbean nation of St. Lucia. Murder carries a sentence of five to 99 years. The punishment phase, which will start Tuesday afternoon, will determine just how long her sentence will be.
Cheers erupted in the courthouse as the verdict was announced, and someone yelled "Thank you, Jesus!" In the hallway outside the courtroom where Guyger was tried, a crowd celebrated and said "black lives matter" in raised voices. When the prosecutors walked into the hall, they broke into cheers.
(((ping)))
Did it come up during the trial if she was on medication? Specifically the ADD/ADHD stuff?
She definitely screwed the pooch big time. I am not sure it was (premeditated) murder, but it was definitely negligent homicide. Many states define their statutes differently so perhaps in Texas we are saying the same thing? I wonder if they hung murder on her for actions after the shooting, like not fully fessing up or something.
Definitely no excuse for what she did, and now multiple lives are ruined.
Does the charge fit?
If medications were involved, I’d suspect Adderoll.
“She definitely screwed the pooch big time. I am not sure it was (premeditated) murder, but it was definitely negligent homicide. “
I think if it hadn’t been white cop/black victim, it would have been negligent homicide.
They wouldn’t test for ADD/ADHD medicine at the time of arrest in all likelihood.
Agree this story reeked and was not believable. Felt like something missing.
Its a sad case. Ive fiddled with unlocking a door in a condo on the floor above me, greatly embarrassed when neighbor opened wondering what was going on.
She used deadly force without at least a word with the intruder? She would have realized that maybe he wasnt an intruder and also be embarrassed. Adrenaline was pumping, I dont buy the long shift excuse.
The verdict is appropriate given the number of times Amber Guyger ignored caution signs, but instead opened the wrong door with gun ablazing.
‘I wonder if they hung murder on her for actions after the shooting, like not fully fessing up or something.’
she failed to render aid after the shooting; also, I heard she shot twice...kind of hard to mitigate her actions, therefore...
Jesus would have understood.
That's nonsense. I know lots of people who take Adderall for ADD or cancer-related fatigue; including me, for both.
If there is a co-morbidity factor, that's different.
I suspect this woman was hired for affirmative action or PC reasons.
Screwed the pooch? She ran a train on the whole kennel.
“””Did it come up during the trial if she was on medication? Specifically the ADD/ADHD stuff?”””
I watched most of the trial and do not recall questions re drug testing.
I assume that in an ‘officer involved shooting’, the officer would be subjected to a complete blood screen.
Whether that would include ADD stuff is not known.
The law enforcement probably do not want the public to know how many police have ADD.
She killed a man while committing a crime: criminal trespass at best or breaking and entering at worst. Killing someone in the commission of a crime in Texas is murder. She got what she deserved. Race and gender had nothing to do with it.
I never bought it! I figured this one lost it, shot the guy and just made up the story!
