Ancient footprints show Neanderthals may have been taller than thought
New Scientist ^ | 9 September 2019 | Alison George

The 257 fossil footprints were found in a coastal creek bed in Le Rozel in northern France. They were made around 80,000 years ago and preserved in sandy mud. Most of the footprints were from children and may show that Neanderthals could have been taller than previously thought.

"The discovery of so many Neanderthal footprints at one site is extraordinary," says Isabelle de Groote at Liverpool John Moores University, who was not involved with the study.

Before this, only nine Neanderthal footprints were known, from 4 different sites, says Jérémy Duveau of the MuséumNational d'Histoire Naturelle in France, who led the team that carried out the analysis. "Footprints are very interesting because they give a snapshot of a moment of life of hominins such as Neanderthals, and allow us to estimate the size and composition of the group that made them." This kind of information is hard to obtain from other archaeological artefacts such as skeletons and tools.

Although the researchers can't be certain that the 80,000-year old footprints at Le Rozel were made by Neanderthals, as no hominin skeletal remains were found at the site, Neanderthals were the only known hominins in Europe at that time - Homo sapiens arrived some 35,000 years later.

The footprints of Neanderthals are wider than those of modern humans because their feet were broader. From the size of the Le Rozel footprints, the researchers could estimate the size of the individual who made them, and then infer their age.

Jerry Nadler, lose weight? You crack me up. :^D

Nadler weighed around 400 pounds, some said more.

In 2002 and 2003, Nadler had laparoscopic duodenal switch surgery which is a stomach stapling surgical procedure and he had side effects of nausea and inability to process food, leading to fainting feelings.

article: May 23, 2019. On Friday at a New York event with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio he appeared to almost pass out. (DeBlasio asked "Are you alright?" Nadler faintly said "No."

That’s odd. The vast majority of my custom Neanderthal-soled shower-shoes were sold to northern France.

Today, differences in skull shape can be used to identify which race a skeleton belongs to.
Haven't you heard? That's just racist. The last prominent anthropologist who exhaustively catalogued by racial type was the ironically named Carleton Coon. It is of course still done and still used, it just isn't emphasized in order to avoid the public pillory.
We’re breaking down human migration histories by DNA changes and flows.
It'll be nice when (if?) the so-called anatomically modern specimens from Africa get their DNA sequenced. People will be in for a surprise I think. Of course, and just to save someone some time, a lack of genetic continuity will then be ascribed the allegedly greater genetic diversity in Africa, and blah blah blah circlular arguments etc etc.

When a population has limited food supplies, it tends to have A) smaller family size and B) less monogamy/male-centric polygamy. Agriculture created a more geographically stable population, greater family sizes, and those are the chromosomes that are disproportionately found in human societies today.

Eventually this realization may dawn, and then other mysteries may arise -- such as, oh, why has there been a series of agricultural revolutions followed by a reversion to hunter-gatherer lifestyles and plunges of population? That'll be fun to watch.

This is entertaining (it’s only partially in reply, my mind wanders) — I uploaded my raw DNA file (Ancestry kit) and it turned up Neandertal (which is what I was interested in), Denisovan, Kennewick Man (!), and a raft of other really old DNA matches, apparently from some prehistoric ancestors who lived by some dirty patch of ice in the middle of nowhere.

Archaic DNA project:

This one may require signing up for GEDmatch, a semi-useful site, membership is free last I knew:

The sheet music for “Girl from Apidima” was found in that dig, I think the fossil skull was dubbed “Hetero Erectus”. /rimshot

So how do they know the footprints are Neanderthal? Is there a logo on the sole?

Picture of Brennan fiercely scowling....

Me to waiter at cafe as I scrolled to Brennan picture:
“Could you please bring some new cream? Mine just went sour.”

You are thoughtful. Also, I forgot to mention they used to say “5 ft 4” for Nadler. Now says “5 ft.3”. Now he is taller than he is wide.

Maybe his ancestors were always a basketball center on the old Neanderthal team. Too tall Nadler.

Thank you for all the links! Now I don’t know about you, but I had to put my doubt cap on for this particular find on the Greek island because of the proposed date for these. While I believe the tracks could be real, the date is too fantastic and illogical for myself. 57k maybe? even 570k extremely maybe? But 57 million years old I could not support at all without some other verified finds somewhere that old to confirm the possibility at all. :)
