When a diet rises to popularity as fast as the ketogenic diet a very-low-carbohydrate, high-fat, and moderate-protein diet it inevitably gains panacea status. (For reference: See the popular movie The Magic Pill on Netflix, which asserts the keto diet can be a powerful cure for health problems.) While clinicians may be using this diet as an adjunct to therapy for particular diseases, its certainly not the answer for all situations, and keto can be downright harmful for some people.

Atkins is the Keto diet - no difference. Severely cutting carbs to get your body in a ketogenesis is the same process no matter what it’s called.
Atkins was a pioneer in that he popularized it and was, obviously, a doctor, which helps on the uptake of the idea.
All the differences are splitting hairs.
Yep, you’re on!
If you are doing Keto, do NOT buy those Atkins meals at the supermarket, they will put you out of Ketosis.
“If you are doing Keto, do NOT buy those Atkins meals at the supermarket, they will put you out of Ketosis.”
I’m not familiar with the Atkins meals, so thank you. When I am on a keto diet, I always home prep - that way I know exactly what is going into the meals, and I have the keto strips I use to make sure I’m staying within my body’s parameters.
There was a local bakery that claimed to sell Keto-friendly baked goods.
I was suckered in and bought some “Keto-Friendly” bread, until I went home and saw the list of ingredients and the listing of Carbs, it was clearly deceptive, and I returned it.
The lesson learned is, if you see something in a store that claims to be “Keto Friendly”, most likely it isn’t.
“I believe I have read studies supporting a form of Keto for MS and Type 1 diabetes.”
Actually, we have a Type 1 on this thread who has had very good results with Keto. That’s enough of a study for me! But Type 1’s will be the last group that has Keto recommended, just because the margin for mistakes is so small for them. I don’t know either way on MS, although nothing would surprise me at this point.
A fairly restrictive diet like Keto makes us crave certain items subconsciously - if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. I’m with ya. “Keto friendly” sounds like they’re covering their bases marketing and legal wise.
“We just called it ‘Keto friendly’, never claimed it was low to 0 carb.”
When I’m on it, I look forward to my cheat day like a dog wanting to go for a walk. The cravings get insane - I’m not ashamed to admit I ate a 6 pack of cookies n cream ice cream sandwiches in one sitting once.
I do make a lot of chocolate treats using 100% Cacao powder and Swerve.
Me too!
Another aspect is that it is easy (at least for me) to go to nice restaurants, have a great meal while staying on the diet...especially steak restaurants like Bones in Atlanta or Bern's Steak House in Tampa.
Knowing what foods are Keto friendly makes this possible.
> Number 1 on the “Don’t Keto” list is Type 1 Diabetes.
You can keto on Type 1. I did for a while. Just reduce your insulin amount and constantly test. You need overnight insulin your first two nights as your liver burns up glycogenolysis. Then you simply take a much lower amount of insulin.
The only thing you need is to watch your carbs, estimate insulin amounts, and test, test, test.
TBI...trust me on that one first hand.
struggle...thanks for sharing your personal experience. You have a lot in common with tnlibertarian.
I certainly trust you, but which condition(s) are you referring to.
“The lesson learned is, if you see something in a store that claims to be Keto Friendly, most likely it isnt.”
I’ve said the same yesterday. My radar goes up when I see it. Some day, hopefully, there will be standards so we can trust Keto claims, but we still have a ways to go there!
You’re right. It is a fine line. Can you add me to the ping list?
I read somewhere that your thyroid needs some(some not truckloads)carbohydrates for optimal performance.
I’m thinking maintenance phase of Atkins amounts might be good.
The Health Conditions We Know That Keto IS NOT Safe and Effective For
Type 1 Diabetes
Eating Disorders
Binge-Eating Disorder (BED)
Gallbladder Removal
Thyroid Disorders
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
It's wrong about Type 1, Thyroid and MS. I don't know about the others.
Dr Bernstein is 84 years old type 1 who has done keto for years. You should see him. He is extremely healthy and very fit.
Please add me to ping list
“please define “exercise intensely””
90 to 100% of maximum heart rate. Gasping for breath - unable to have a conversation. Sprint training. Race pace. Crossfit WODs.
Things like that. I was fine with long slow distance types of things, like 60 to 70% of max heart rate.
I was bike riding - typically one hour sessions, with intervals of varying intensity, as measured by power output in watts.
“what adverse reactions did you have?”
It just seemed a lot harder, I did not feel up to it, and my top training speeds dropped a lot. I got an out of gas feeling (max speed) at a significantly lower speed.
I just did it for about six weeks to try it.
