When a diet rises to popularity as fast as the ketogenic diet a very-low-carbohydrate, high-fat, and moderate-protein diet it inevitably gains panacea status. (For reference: See the popular movie The Magic Pill on Netflix, which asserts the keto diet can be a powerful cure for health problems.) While clinicians may be using this diet as an adjunct to therapy for particular diseases, its certainly not the answer for all situations, and keto can be downright harmful for some people.

Low Carb Ping List
LOW CARB / KETO PING!!!
I outlined the article below, so people can have it as a reference. The article seems well-written, and about as unbiased as can be hoped for. None of the “you will die” scare tactics that we often see, instead they’re just pointing out where the science is now.
I do think that cancer is an interesting one - and if Keto works for that, it will raise a lot of eyebrows!
They also mention Virta Health, which I think was started by Dr. Tim Noakes, who actually went on trial for telling people to go low-carb (in South Africa), and won the case, which was to keep his medical license. Virta is his revenge for what he went through. This is incredible person (see his videos, they’re the best), and things may really change due to his work.
In any case, this article is definitely worth a read.

The poor compliance was attributed to side effects, social isolation, and cravings, says Yawitz. And some people in the study reported the diet simply wasnt helping them lose weight, she adds. Brissette agrees with this line of thinking. In my opinion, the keto diet isn’t sustainable and takes the joy and fun out of eating, she says.”
BS. Maybe it’s just me...but this is the easiest, least stressful, most rewarding diet I’ve ever been on. Does it take some willpower....yes. But not nearly the amount as other diets I’ve done in the past. I may’ve been lucky with the keto flu...as I think I only had a day’s worth of it.
Now, I eat one meal a day and my appetite is suppressed most of the rest of time (my version of intermittent fasting). I started with three meals but eventually cut back to one as my appetite faded. Yes, I get occasional desires for carb-type food, but they’re easily bypassed. I also tend to flag energy-wise later in the day, especially if I’ve walked that day (which I usually do), but the early supper meal picks me right up. And the meals I eat are GREAT...large portions of meat-beef/pork/chicken, a salad, steamed veggies, some cheese maybe. Also, there is NO trouble finding a good meal when eating out.
I started at 184, and am at 161 right now. The first 20 pounds went fast, loss has slowed some but I’m still losing weight. This is a lifestyle change for me more than a diet. When I hit my goal of 155 I’ll slack off on the “no/low carb” aspect, but I’m never going back to the “carb gluttony” I pig-rolled in previously.
Would u add me to the Ping list. Thx
Yep, you’re Number 76!
“On the Keto, you replace carbs with “good” fat. On the Atkins, you simply reduce carbs, typically replacing them with protein.”
Just to add a bit. If there is one area that can cause people trouble with Keto is going too protein heavy, which is why Ftr and Keto say to replace the carbs with fat. As far as I can tell, for people who don’t have unrelated health problems, they’ll be fine with Keto if they keep their protein level under control.
I’m working on putting together a listing of Keto-friendly foods that will show which ones are fat-heavy, versus which ones are protein-heavy. So far, I show the following:
PROTEIN HEAVY
1. poultry
2. fish
3. pork skins (surprisingly)
4. lean red meat
FAT HEAVY
1. nuts
2. avocados
3. fatty red meat (the yummy stuff)
4. cheeze
5. BUTTER!!!
Butter is the clear winner, with 99% of its calories coming from fat. So if you do have some of the protein-heavy items, adding butter will certainly help a lot to get the numbers better!
“I disagree about Type 1 diabetes. I am Type 1 and currently going back on keto.”
Congrats to you! As a Type 1, you really do have to thread the needle to get the Insulin right, so I can’t blame the author for being conservative there, considering the consequence of getting it wrong (even once), could be catastrophic.
But it’s great to hear that you’re doing well, considering your condition, and are happy with Keto. Keep it up!
HHmmmm....wonder why KETO isn’t good for thyroid disorders...maybe for extreme thyroid problems?
Please add me to the keto ping list.
I like South Beach better, Keto is a little high fat for me.....
You’re added, Miltie!
Exercising while in Ketosis is one of my interests. Here's a thread I started yesterday:
I exercise daily, on the treadmill, at a heart rate of 115 to 120 BPM. At my age, this is well into cardio. So far, I have had no adverse reactions.
For my personal knowledge base, please define "exercise intensely". Also, what adverse reactions did you have?
Thanks.
But make sure you get plenty of Omega 3 fats. Too much Omega 6 causes inflammation. Fish are the best source of Omega 3s.
One other thing that helps with Keto is getting your calorie usage up. Calories still count, its just that when your hungry your body trains itself to use fat stores instead of asking for carbs.
If you get stuck then you have to learn to trust your body when it says you aren’t hungry yet meal time is here.
I’ve lost almost 100 lbs on Keto. It’s come off over the last 18 months. I’m about 40lbs away from goal weight.
My advice is, if you do eat lean meats, spread some butter or coconut oil over the meat to get the fats.
You are spot on.. That’s how to do it!
Will you add me to the low-carb ping list? Thanks much!
I believe I have read studies supporting a form of Keto for MS and Type 1 diabetes.
Great post...absolutely spot on!
