Israeli spacecraft Beresheet crashes as moon landing fails in final moments

Key Points

Non-profit SpaceIL was aiming to become the first private entity to softly land a spacecraft on the moon’s surface. “We have a failure of the spacecraft ... we have not landed successfully,” SpaceIL said on the livestream of the landing attempt. At a cost of about $100 million, the “Beresheet” spacecraft was backed by private donors.

A small lunar lander crashed into the surface of the moon on Thursday, coming just short of the venture’s ultimate goal.

Non-profit SpaceIL was aiming to become the first private entity to softly land a spacecraft on the moon’s surface – a feat previously achieved by only three governments in history. SpaceIL confirmed that its robotic “Beresheet” spacecraft was not successful.

“We have a failure of the spacecraft. We unfortunately have not managed to land successfully,” Opher Doron, general manger of the Israel Aerospace Industries space program, said on the SpaceIL’s livestream of the landing attempt.

“If at first you don’t succeed, try again,” Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after the crash. He added the prediction that Israel will be successful in two or three years, as “an Israeli spacecraft will land on the moon, whole.”

Beresheet is the Hebrew word for genesis, literally translating as “in the beginning.” The spacecraft traveled for about 4 million miles before reaching the moon. The SpaceIL team showed an image of the spacecraft, taken at about 22 kilometers above the lunar surface as Beresheet began its final approach.

“We are the seventh country to orbit the moon and the fourth to reach the moon’s surface,” Doron said. “It’s a tremendous achievement up to now.”

The only other countries to reach the lunar surface before Israel are the United States, Russia and China. No private entity has safely landed a spacecraft on the moon.

Messages of condolences and congratulations poured in from around the world, as many still hailed the mission as a success for its ambition and accomplishments along the way.

“While NASA regrets the end of the TeamSpaceIL mission without a successful lunar landing, we congratulate SpaceIL, Israel Aerospace Industries and the state of Israel on the accomplishment of sending the first privately funded mission into lunar orbit,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a tweet.

At a cost of about $100 million, the low budget lander was backed by private donors, with state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries involved as a partner. SpaceIL president and billionaire entrepreneur Morris Kahn personally donated $40 million of the project’s costs. While the mission’s cost was higher than previously expected, Beresheet’s mission came at a fraction of previous multi-billion dollar of previous government projects.

The SpaceIL project was initially a competitor in the Google Lunar Xprize but that race ended last March with no winners. Although Google withdrew its $20 million prize, the Xprize Foundation had said it would give SpaceIL a $1 million award for the successful lunar landing. The Xprize founder Peter Diamandis said his organization would still award the SpaceIL team with the $1 million so the team can “continue their work and pursue Beresheet 2.0.”

SpaceX launched Beresheet as a secondary payload on a Falcon 9 rocket in February. The spacecraft traveled for nearly seven weeks before reaching the moon.

That’s my thinking. They landed. Hard. But they landed! If it was me flying this thing, odds are good I wouldn’t crash because I wouldn’t be close to ‘finding’ the moon. lol

Too bad. But it’s good they got this far.

Maybe next time it will be successful.

Lol! The palestinians were going to claim it was part of their ancestral lands anyways.

There’s an idea for their next payload! Don’t change a thing...

Is it hard to land on the moon?

Does a Beresheet in the woods?

That is ok. The moon belongs to the US and time we return and take possession.

They did land just maybe not as softly as they had hoped. Sad though, wish they had been the first. B’reshit, the first book of scripture was a great name choice.

It was a very clever, very low energy path to the moon that traded time for fuel and rocket. THAT part was a success.

Or better yet, since the Israelis are trekking the moon, the UN will demand israel to give up their country to the Palestinians since Israel will already have prime real estate on the moon.

FWIW a lot of the early American moon spacecraft malfunctioned too.

But NASA eventually got it right, and Israel will too.

It's not Saturday yet. Shabbat HaGadol, 413.

Beresheet isn't dead because dreams don't die.

The Apollo Effect - it's real. "413 is in"...

Aldrin: 413 is in.
MCC: We copy you down, Eagle.
Armstrong: Houston, uh...
Armstrong: Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.
MCC: Roger, Twan... Tranquility. We copy you on the ground.
MCC: You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot.

Twan, twin, twain coming from mission control... it's like with the famous first words, people think Armstrong misspoke.

"We copy you on the ground"

Anyway, "We're breathing again."

Ezekiel 37

1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones,
2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.
3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest.
4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.
5 Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:
6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.
8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them.
9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.
10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.
11 Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
12 Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13 And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14 And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.

The bones of Joseph are his essense, framework, consitution. Nobody gets out of Egypt (the crypt, the grave, the ratwheel) without the bones of Joseph.

Joseph was the big dreamer, his brothers derisively calling him the "Lord of Dreams".

We shall see what will become of his dreams.

Because...

Joseph's bones are Joseph's dreams. It's his essential framework.

Sleepers and dreamers look alike. Who's who? The tell is in the eyes. REM (רע"מ, which is thunder... applause).

Joseph is alive and he's the governor (regulator) over all of Egypt - Snoozeville, Ratwheelville... circadian rhythms.

In Hebrew it's simply called the biological clock [שעון ביולוגי], which permutes to "a clock of revelation (discovery) is in him".

At the outset, the Torah connects Jacob with Joseph. Of all his sons specifically Joseph holds the key to not only Jacob's but the family's mission. In this Torah portion, we will examine the implications of that mission from the mystical -- that is Kabbalistic -- standpoint. To do so, we must go back to the point where all it first began:

Joseph From the Kabbalistic Perspective

Can these DREAMS live? You betcha, it's a biological clock. Open 24 hours. When Israel is merged with "In the beginning" (see image below), the cycle of the Torah is as 304,800 letters (because the last word - Israel - is wedged in the beginning). 127 x 2400.

You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again.

Same thing! All Israel in the beginning, what little Beresheet has been saying all along: "Am Israel Chai."

Joseph holds the key.

It's sitting there in Gen 41:45, the last letters of "shem Yosef Tzafnat Pa'aneach", which means "Joseph's name is cipher-decipherer".

Spells mafte'ach, "key", which is also a skip of 4. Makes sense - find a key where you need to decipher something, like under the doormat.

Only it's not just the word "key" (or legend of a map, or musical staff)...

It's the word DEVELOPER. The guy who takes his vision and skillsets and makes reality happen, or why Pharaoh named Joseph that in the first place. It was the Spirit of Elohim in him, the spirit of discovery/revelation like in Gen 1:2-3 ("Let there be light, and there was light.")

Film developer, software developer... real estate developer.

The film developer is the guy who takes a negative, and turns it into a positive.

Yeesh, where is everybody on this stuff. Crickets. Egads, anyone out there with the vision to just start off with one single LEGO? ---> GOEL. Come on, live a little.
