Extinct human species lived together in Siberian cave, new research shows

Bones recently found in a Siberian cave have given researchers a new glimpse into the timeline of an extinct human species. The species – known as Denisovans – at one time lived alongside Neanderthals in the same cave, the evidence showed.

The only fossil evidence of the Denisovans was uncovered in Denisova Cave in the Russian Altai Mountains back in 1980, and amount to three teeth and bone fragments.

“Denisovans are a sister group to Neanderthals – that is, they are closer in terms of shared ancestry to Neanderthals than they are to modern humans,” study leader and geochronologist Dr. Richard Roberts of Australia’s University of Wollongong told Fox News.

“We know almost nothing about the physical appearance of the Denisovans, as we only have a few teeth (which are quite chunky) and even fewer scraps of bone.”

A new study revealed that the Denisovans lived in the cave from at least 200,000 to less than 50,000 years ago.

It was a popular cave with these extinct species – according to another recent study, it was also populated with Neanderthals at one point.

“[Denisovans] might have arrived as early as 300,000 years ago, but we don’t have any fossils or DNA associated with the 300,000-year-old artifacts,” Roberts said.

“We can also say that Neanderthals were present at Denisova Cave from at least 190,000 years ago until at least 90,000 years ago, but further fossil discoveries and DNA from the cave sediments may extend the time range of both Denisovans and Neanderthals at the site.”

Last year, a bone fragment from a girl was found in the cave. Her father had been a Denisovan and her mother a Neanderthal, so evidence of interbreeding between the two groups exists.

They’re all just early humans.

I look forward to these articles dealing with archaeology. Yet these writers and specialists need to label their findings as theory.

Her father had been a Denisovan and her mother a Neanderthal

The girl was probably teased mercilessly. "Your mother wears Neanderthal boots!"

Thanks ETL. Of course you realize a topic like this is bound to cause mass hysteria. ;^)

Since when does a finding necessarily become a theory?

If evidence is found and verified in multiple ways, from which a generalization might be logically and reasonably made, those might have right to be called 'facts.'

Out of no primordial soup has life ever been shown to evolve. The most modern science knows of no way to foster its occurrence.

Darwin always cautioned that evolution was just a theory, but if facts be found that counter a theory, it should no longer be called a theory. It would be a "discredited hypothesis or set of hypotheses."

There is no evidence to conclude that we share a common ancestor with modern-day, tree-climbing primates. Those have 44 chromosomes where homo sapiens sapiens have 46. No offspring can be produced therefrom (absent an act of God). No mutation has otherwise been found where viable, fertile offspring can subsequently mate between creatures with differing numbers of chromosomes.

There are many such facts that basically blast Darwin's theory of evolution out of the water.

Furthermore, at least one Denisovan was able ~70,000 years ago to take time away from his hunting, grunting and gathering to create extraordinarily exquisite jewlery. The technology to make drill that was used to create it are akin to the Neolithic era, dozens of millennia later. The advanced brain function rivals activities only imagined 40,000+ years later.

At what leisure activities would one imagine the well-dressed Denisovan would choose these accessories?

I wouldn’t enter that cave. It looks like King Kong with his maw wide open. Of course, the Denisovans didn’t have electricity so they weren’t able to watch their King Kong DVD to recognize the danger.

After seeing the speculative drawings of both I suspect that they had to show their identity cards to know which part of the cave they belonged in.
