Beavers are back in Italy after an absence of nearly 500 years as big mammals rebound in Europe

fter an absence from Italy of nearly 500 years, beavers are back.

The species, which was once widespread across Europe, has been spotted in Italy’s northerly region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

The animals are believed to have wandered over the border from neighbouring Austria or possibly Slovenia.

An adult beaver was filmed by a camera trap in a forest near Tarvisio, a town that lies in the triangle where Italy, Austria and Slovenia converge.

“The reason beavers disappeared from Italy is simple – for hundreds of years they were trapped for their fur and also prized for their meat,” Paolo Molinari, a wildlife biologist working in the region, told The Telegraph.

I was trying to be a bit sly. People would click on the video expecting to see a beaver from Italy and instead get the great Leslie Nielsen.

My ex finally went back to Istanbul. This may explain the outbreak. Too bad she was rabid - they can be fairly cuddly creatures as long as you treat them right.

“I am certain that FReepers will discuss the matter with all the delicacy and aplomb that the topic merits.”

We Canadian Freepers are especially sensitive to Americans appropriating our national symbol; with the Italians...not so much.

Everybody shoud catch Beaver Fever!

snicker...

Beaver make wonderful pets. Treat them nice, buy them great food and drink, keep their vehicle running, and their cellular service paid up they are great to have around. Piss’em off and the dam breaks. Just saying.

I only arrived at the tail end of these comments (page two), but I will say this is the best 2018 discussion by a dam site.

Although the Eurasian beaver appears superficially similar to the North American beaver, there are several important differences, chief among these being that the North American beaver has 40 chromosomes, while the Eurasian beaver has 48. The two species are not genetically compatible: After more than 27 attempts in Russia to hybridize the two species, the result was one stillborn kit that was bred from the pairing of a male North American beaver and a female Eurasian beaver. The difference in chromosome count makes interspecific breeding unlikely in areas where the two species’ ranges overlap.[2]

You do realize by mentioning “giant beaver” you opened up an entire new avenue for more of this topic, humor, or scientific conjecture? I had my doubts but this truly might be the best 2018 discussion this year. LMAO
