All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
vanity | 2/26/18 | CottonBall

I’ve been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything – all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.

We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I don’t mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.

But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on granny’s thread.

I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on granny’s threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room – and insisted upon having a basement – from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products….the list is endless.

So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have granny’s ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.

We’ll just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to – because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I won’t be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself – to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. I’d just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

hey DW!!!

Wonderful to hear from you! How is the daughter and the Mrs.?

Yeah I sure miss those old threads, and granny’s wisdom, and the camaraderie. I tried to resurrect them but since I don’t have the same draw granny had, or the same persistence, it is languishing.

I’ve been having some arm trouble’s so I just check in on her forehead try not to post much. As soon as I get feeling better I will try to resurrect the thread with more energy and Verver. Want me to put you on the ping list? Do you get here often?

I figure it’s time to revive this thread!

I hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas.

I have been struggling with misdiagnosed very painful bilateral golfer’s elbow since last May. So I haven’t kept up with this thread, or much of anything else.

But I’m on the mend and would love to hear how everyone’s doing. If anyone has a topic, a question, or idea about prepping, please share. The Deep State doesn’t want to let Trump win anything, so prepping is as crucial as ever. Sadly.

Thanks to TIK for reminding me that this thread has been languishing and that it is in need of TLC

Hello there! So sorry to hear of your aches and pains.
Just recently, it’s the same here with shoulders and arms. Fortunately, the unpleasantness subsides allowing me to once again sleep on my side. Several days were very ‘iffy’ especially when reaching on an upper shelf in the kitchen cabinet. Just too painful. Ben Gay and friends were a big help.

Hope all here had a very Merry Christmas.

Oh, I feel for you. It is so hard to deal with pain when trying to get things done.

This whole experience has really helped me realize that when things get bad I’m going to have to have some young strong healthy people in my group. A bunch of people with knowledge and experience is great, but not when all of us are between 50 and 70!

I read an interesting article on prepping the other. We always talk about needing shelter, water, and food. The point the author made was that air is numero uno.

As in only minutes without adequate oxygen is terminal.

So his advice is to make sure that you have a mask to serve as a filter. I think people in Israel do make sure they have these.

For most emergencies, not necessary where we live, but there you have it.

I just got a couple of books for my birthday and Christmas. The Lost Ways, and The Lost Book of Remedies. Haven’t had a chance to read them yet.

How’s the elbow doing? Celadrin is my preping choice for joint repair.

Perhaps we’ll be fortunate to find a sale on used robots; or find a few boy toys to do the hard labor. Grandchildren, nieces, nephews? Might they be interested?

At this time it’s DH who is doing the heavy lifting, which is why (perhaps) there are still boxes sitting on the kitchen floor and countless utensils still not found. LOL a game of scavenger hunt!

Those books sound great. Please share bits and pieces from them when you start reading.

Of course gardening will be a big part of our survival. You certainly have a heads up on that :-) I’m trying to learn with each passing year but it seems the more I learn the less I know.

I hadn’t heard of it so I just Googled. Does it work well for you?

Apparently I don’t have tendonitis but tendinosis. But first I was misdiagnosed with cubital tunnel syndrome. Which is neurological and totally different. It really helped to be treated for the right thing finally! Anyway tendinosis is not inflammatory, it is little tears in the tendon after repeated bouts of tendonitis. So they anti-inflammatories and ice were actually doing damage! I didn’t start getting better until I quit those. And heat is now my friend.

Interesting idea and not something I ever heard about before. I wonder if Food Service masks would be good enough? When I thought I was going to open a spice business, I got a couple boxes. They are fairly cheap.

Yeah I suppose the situation is different. We might have to go back to the old days of big families. Mine has dwindled to the point where it would just be my son and maybe my nephew.

Lol, your hubby sounds like mine. Or maybe it’s just a common male trait.

Dust masks are in my ‘get home’ bag in my pickup. My daughter was 6 months old when St. Helens blew. The dust mask covered her whole face with the exception of two little eyes looking out

The Celadrin works great. I have recommended it to my marathon jogging daughter and super athlete grandson. They both had good results with their knees. Keeps me from getting a shoulder doctor. Doesn’t seem to help my wife.

Sounds like it might be a good medicine to store then. Even if one doesn’t need it, it would be good for bargaining.

I recently finished up de-mucking and making deeper the old cow pond that's in my front yard. It's filling up with water now. Got another 4" of new water from rainfall last night.

I've put ~80 ton of crushed limestone in the basin, and some bigger stuff along one bank. That will help with keeping the Ph good, and provide habitat for the little fish and crustaceans.

I'll be stocking my forage minnows in the spring, then start the sport/food fish stocking next fall.

If times get tough we won't starve and we won't die of dehydration.
