The Ketogenic Diet Might Burn 10 Times More Fat Than The Standard American Diet

Pretty impressive.

Many people who follow the ketogenic diet (a.k.a. keto) are obsessed with its ability to help you lose weight quickly—and keep it off. Now, new research has found that the low-carb diet may have one especially huge perk going for it: It might burn 10 times more fat than other diets.

That’s the major finding from research published in the journal Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews. For the study, scientists took 30 adults who had been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, a group of health conditions that increase the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. They then randomly put them in three groups: One group ate a ketogenic diet but didn’t exercise, another ate a standard American diet and didn’t exercise, and a third that ate a standard American diet and exercised for 30 minutes a day for up to five days a week.

Here’s what they found: In 10 weeks, the group that was on the ketogenic diet had “significant” changes in their weight, body fat percentage, BMI, hemoglobin A1c (a test that measures a person’s blood sugar), and ketones (the result of your body burning fat for energy). Their resting metabolic rate, which is the rate that your body body burns energy when you’re not doing anything, was more than 10 times that of people who ate a standard diet. “All variables for the ketogenic group out-performed those of the exercise and non-exercise groups,” the researchers wrote in the study. (Learn how bone broth can help you lose weight with Women's Health's Bone Broth Diet.)

See what happened when one woman tried the ketogenic diet:

In case you’re not familiar with it, the keto diet is a high-fat, low-carb diet that encourages followers to get a moderate amount of protein. Carbs are generally replaced with fats, and it’s thought that this shifts your body into a metabolic state known as ketosis.

The keto diet generally shuns sugar, processed foods, low-fat foods, grains and gluten, high-carb fruit, and vegetable oils. Instead, followers are encouraged to eat plenty of non-starchy vegetables, lean meats and fish, full-fat dairy, and nuts and seeds.

It’s worth pointing out that this study is small and it focused on people with a health condition—not otherwise healthy people. Still, the findings are definitely worth thinking about if you've been mulling over going keto.

Here is a forum that has a lot of info on low carb. It has sub-forums with the different plans, recipes, exercises, different health issues that may affect weight loss and you can keep a journal.

Our ancestors back a hundred years plus lived on this diet.

Not really unless you are talking the summer diet.

Without refrigeration and pressure canning having safe meat and veggies year around could be a problem which was why people ate things that stored. Small amounts of smoked or salted meat, potatoes, storage friendly vegetables such as cabbage and hard squash, some dried fruit and fruits that stored like apples.

Sure you had a cow and laying hens but once again, milk and eggs were seasonal.

Of course people were working all that carb heavy food off with manual labor. Just doing the laundry was a major work out.

>Low carb is a great way to lose weight, and most people mistake the Atkins first two weeks for a lifestyle. There’s a limit to how much energy the body can generate from fat stores. It will take resources from other lean tissue (muscle) if that amount is exceeded. x10 seems like hype.

It doesn’t matter as long as you get enough protein. Muscle is constantly being used as an energy source and the body rebuilds it from protein every day.

x10 is wrong. Keto’s slightly better at losing weight than normal diets. However, keto + intermediate fasting is very, very good at losing weight. IF is really hard to do on a normal carb diet so it’s a good match.

>When doing this, it is good to watch blood acid level so as to not create ketone acidosis, common to diabetics.

If you’re a type one diabetic keto can be quite dangerous. Don’t ever do it without working with a doctor. Ketone acidosis is unknown outside diabetics.

The big problem appears to be the carb-heavy snacking as well. That messes with our insulin cycle.

Secondly, people’s health declined a lot when they switch from hunter/gathering to farming. Meat’s a much better source of food than wheat.

You could definitely lose a ton of weight while eating 50% or more of your calories in fat, but stick to healthy fat or you will still be filled with inflammation (cause of diseases).

And there is no reason to go full keto unless you have one of the conditions it fights. There is a good reason to make sure that your carb ratio is high enough to get in enough food for your good bacteria. They eat starches. So low carb is good but natural starches like root veggies and seeds or beans should be in the daily diet. You don’t need much. Feed them for your own health.

And protein should still be quite high. The good thing is that healthy animal protein always has fat built in.

Your gut bugs will make you suffer if they aren’t fed. Also, you may have a lot of bad bacteria craving sugar. As they switch, as you slowly move low carb, the bacteria pop will change and you will get more kinds who crave fat. No more headaches from low ‘sugar’ (they consider most carbs especially processed ones to be sugar).

These kind of diets make you feel hungry. Look up “why am I so hungry on a carb free diet”. People can’t afford to eat like this. You have to eat all the time, or large amts of food to feel full. Ridiculous.

JT, since I went low carb and calculating everything I eat, it’s amazing how much fat I get in a day. No day is under 50% fat. And I have lost weight! It’s true that eating fat doesn’t make you fat, and now I know for sure.

I slipped into ketosis all the time while pregnant. I did not crave, actively rejected, all carbs. My doctor didn’t like how I wasn’t gaining and asked me to eat ice cream every night. That was my daily carb. I still didn’t gain but my baby was perfect healthy.

I love sour cream, and can have a lot of it on that diet ;-)

I put a big blob in the middle of Gazpacho.

Right. No one of normal or somewhat overweight lbs needs to be on full keto. You simply MUST have natural starches every day to feed the gut bugs. 50-80 g carbs a day is still quite low for Americans. You don’t need full keto.

>Farming is what enabler civilization to prosper

Sure because farming allows a higher density of people, which enables town and city formation. There’s no civilization without farming. On the other hand, based on archaeology evidence, people’s health declined a lot when they started farming. We just don’t function as well on a high carb diet. People are shorter, die younger, and have more health problems.

That would make sense based upon current research.

It was not generally considered good practice in the past.

If you do go low carb, you won’t be going to bed with a carby snack, so you won’t wake up with the gnawing hunger that eating carbs the day before gives people in the morning. So you can hold off maybe to lunch, then have whatever you would have inside a sandwich, without the bread. And you will be more satisfied than during your carb days.

If you work out in the morning though, you should follow up the workout with protein. Maybe some powder in something, veg juice, I don’t know.
