Astronomers are set to scan an 'alien' comet for signs of extraterrestrial technology.
The cigar-shaped asteroid, named 'Oumuamua by its discoverers, sailed past Earth last month and is the first interstellar object seen in the solar system.
A team of alien-hunting scientists, led by Russian billionaire Yuri Milner, will scan the comet this week before it sails beyond the reach of Earth's telescopes.
They say they are looking for radio signals, claiming the mysterious visitor could be an alien spaceship.
The alien-hunting project will use the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia for its investigation, with the campaign set to begin at 3:00pm ET (8:00pm GMT) on Wednesday.
The telescopes sensitive equipment would would take less than a minute to pick up something as faint as the radio waves from a smartphone, according to the Atlantic.
Milner, the business mogul behind Breakthrough Listen, a $100 million (£75m) search for intelligent extraterrestrial life, received an email about the object last week from one of his chief scientists.

"Can you hear me now?"
I hope we’re also transmitting at it, so as to “wake it up” in case it’s set to listen before it says anything. Also, while it has shown no non-Newtonian activity while within the solar system, there’s no reason that it couldn’t have done all its maneuvering prior to getting close enough to be seen, or that it won’t reorient itself again once it’s out of sight.
As for dealing with the distance, true it would have had to travel for millions of years at least to have come through known space from its point of origin, but if it really is artificial, there’s no reason its creators couldn’t have found some way to travel FTL that violates our current understanding of physics. For all we know, FTL travel could be blindingly obvious to a creature that can think in 5 dimensions (or more), or alternately is stupefyingly simple but we somehow just missed it (a la Turtledove’s “Road Less Traveled”).
It’s Bill & Hillary Clinton’s deep space transport, coming to take them back to planet Humidor, populated entirely by female interns who look like Huma Wiener, where Hillary will be named Dear Leader of the Galactic Empire, replacing Scientology’s Xenu, who is retiring to Tampa, FL.
Thought the same thing!
Or 1947 Roswell, NM?............................
You rang?
Best movie ever - Arrival. And the short story behind it is far more awesome.
Nothing to see here. It’s just an interstellar RV.
Or punch cards...
You watch way too much Star Trek.
Having discovered no intelligent life on Earth, it’s moving on.
Then I guess we’ll have to get in our Klingon Battle cruiser and go back to 1982 and retrieve an old Sony machine to take Back to the Future so we can get their message that says “Be Sure to Drink Your Ovaltine.”...................
Am reading the series now....................
In politics, there are no coincidences.............FDR.............
Good, I liked those. Unlike the Mars series, in which I only liked Red Mars, while the others were as waste of time.
Good one!
The Event Horizon has returned! (Space horror movie)
