Thursday, just two days after a terror suspect killed eight people by driving a truck down a large swath of the bike path in lower Manhattan, city and state Department of Transportation crews began installing concrete and Jersey barriers at 57 spots along the route between 59th Street and the World Trade Center, according to the mayors office.
The barriers are meant to protect pedestrians and cyclists on the greenway from vehicular traffic on the West Side Highway.
Vehicles wont be able to access places they arent supposed to, said Ben Sarle, a spokesman for the mayors office. Theyre extremely heavy and effective.
But at the corner of West 37th Street, crews set down a slab of concrete diagonally in the middle of the bike path.
Stupidest idea I have ever seen. Thousands of bikers go here, said Robert Sinclair, 44, of Clinton Hill. People are going to seriously hit that.
It was unclear if it would be moved in the future. A request for comment from the city DOT was not immediately returned.
The 20-foot-long Jersey barriers put in by the state are particularly dangerous, according to White, because they turn a two-way bike lane into one single lane, effectively putting north and southbound cyclists on a collision course.
The Hudson River Greenway is the busiest pedestrian and bike path in North America -- it is used and beloved by hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers every year, and the city and state's current solutions fail them in spectacular fashion, White added. We need to protect our public spaces without making them uninviting and difficult to use.
Cathy Calhoun, chief of staff for the state DOT, said the barriers are only a short-term fix, put up to quickly to enhance the security around the bike path after Tuesday's attack.

As a regular bike rider in Manhattan, it would make things a whole lot safer for bicyclists, and for pedestrians, who often blindly walk in or cross bike lanes, usually while texting. However, as you say, they would look awful and be very expensive, given that we have so many bike lanes throughout the city.
Place them along the borders.
Love your logic.
Hey Mayor DeBlasio, if barriers are the solution then you must be for barriers at the border. Are you now supporting President Trump's border wall?
Call them diversity barriers.
They won’t stop a muslim with a knife.
What, a WALL, what kind of message does this send to the followers of the great profit Mohammad?
They've likely already caused dozens of injuries at this point... If I lived nearby, I'd certainly make a quick stencil 'Thank Islam' and add it to each side of every barrier.
'course, I'm sure I'd also be charged with a hate crime for doing so...
I hope they make sure to lock the barn door after the horse gets out!
Same Old, Same Old. *Rolleyes*
I thought we all agreed that walls don’t work!

As I put it the other day, after congratulating that Canadian sniper on his new world record for longest confirmed kill, what's the point of picking off an ISIS barbarian at 3,450 meters halfway round the globe if back on the home front you keep importing thousands upon thousands who share his world view? Or at any rate incline more to his than to yours, at least when it comes to legal systems, the segregation of the sexes, etc. As Miss Ibrahim's ascent through the cloisters of Salford reminds us, bollards aren't much of an obstacle to any of that.
The guy could have just run a Red Light and taken out a Crosswalk full of People.
He would have done the same damage driving just one block.
What are they going to do, install those Steel Barriers that spring up from underground at every Intersection now?
I guess our Overlords will never figure out that the combination of Evil and Human Ingenuity is difficult to overcome, if not impossible.
What goes around comes around.

It might stop a truck from ramming into a crowd, but it won’t stop some muzzy from dumping a bomb behind the barrier. They’ll simply adjust their method of delivery.
Forget my last post. I mistakenly thought they had put these barriers up for some race they were supposed to have this weekend.
Next... concrete barriers all over Central Park. These people are as dumb as the TSAs shoe removal doctrine after the shoe-bomber.
There is someone here who worked on designing that pathway or something similar in nyc. I just glanced at post so dont remember what he said. Maybe he will appear
Thanks Bin Laden!
About as effective a deterrent as a "no gun" sign to a determined criminal.
Build your walls at the borders and immigrations checkpoints and you don’t have to despoil the landscapes of America.
Sidewalks are next...
Treating the symptoms but not the illness.
Islam is the illness.
Pull it out, root and branch, and there will be no symptoms to treat.
