An Ice Age site in San Diego, Calif., preserves 130,000-year-old bones and teeth of a mastodon that show evidence of modification by early humans. Analysis of these finds dramatically revises the timeline for when humans first reached North America, according to new research.
The fossil remains were discovered by Museum paleontologists during routine paleontological mitigation work at a freeway expansion project site managed by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). The bones, tusks, and molars, many of which are sharply broken, were found deeply buried alongside large stones that appeared to have been used as hammers and anvils, making this the oldest in situ, well-documented archaeological site in the Americas.
But, but - where are all the posts fundamentalist Christians? And our LDS brothers and sisters? Guess they’re all cross-checking Ringo Starr’s comments in the 1981 movie Caveman.
(OK everybody, lighten up - I’m a Senior ICPC Law Enforcement Chaplain)
Could be poop remains after the dinos ate them all up?
Were those the actual colors or are we just guessing. :’)
Actual evidence of the remains of true homo sapiens (e.g. a substantially complete modern looking skull) are almoat nonexistent prior to 9,000 BC.
Why would this be such a heated question? I know Native American groups like to think of themselves as the original Americans, but that surely shouldn't cow serious researchers. Then there is the ever-intriguing question of why civilization arose where it did, and why, with the Americas and sub-Saharan Africa noticeably lagging. I had the notion that relatively short habitation of the Americas functioned as something of a mitigating factor. Jared Diamond made a splash awhile back with Guns, Germs, and Steel (which I never found very persuasive), but I've not read enough of the literature to comment with any confidence. So: why is an earlier human presence in the Americas a touchy subject?
1491.
It has always puzzled me why there are so many of the crude biface tools around when the indigenous people of the time had the skills for making better products. Well, finally the theory is emerging that the cruder tools came from earlier times when tool making skills were not so well developed. This thinking was not allowed when the PC timeframe was that there were no humans here more than 14,000 years ago. It's time to discard that thinking.
“130,000-year-old bones and teeth of a mastodon”
That was a really old mastodon. Bet it was tough.
Oh lol...I remember that place on the way to the GC. What a nostalgic trip!
If you believe the alternative history researchers and writers, there were a lot of discoveries made on the west coast in the early 20th century that were too at odds with the prevailing theories of when and by whom this continent was peopled. According to them this information was either destroyed and secreted away to the bowels of the Smithsonian.
Interesting post on its own. But also for the implication: The science is never settled. And. Odds are in favor of another find to come, if you assume it unlikely that this is the very oldest site where man set up a slaughterhouse. Perhaps much earlier and much farther north. Or south. Or west.
I’d like to see a computer model accurately predict where to find another site 10,000 years older. Or you know, a prediction of the climate 100 years from now.
1491.....Before the European White Man came, when life was good.

I was referencing the book “1491” that theorizes what is now turning up in various digs...
“Analysis of these finds dramatically revises the timeline for when humans first reached North America, according to new research.”
NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!! Timeline is SET, a consensus among scientists says there can be no changing!!! Big Bang!! Evolution!! Cataclysmic meteor!! Land bridge!!
Continental drift!! Global Cooling!! Global Warming!! We were THERE!!! We saw it ALL!! We know it all!! Anyone who disagrees is WRONG!!! \sarc
I love it when something like this pops up.
Then...A journey of 10,000 miles begins with a single step...
Now...A journey of 10,000 miles begins with multiple body searches...
I love it when something like this pops up.>>>>>>>>>>>

I love to see political correctness destroyed by a paradigm shift. The Lefty cognitive dissonance is so very entertaining.
You forgot about building canoes to cross the oceans. That will add more years. Getting closer to 10,000 years
Less than a mile a day?
You assuming they were dragging Barca Loungers and entertainment centers?
Whoever they were, they did nothing but walk and run. On a migratory trek they could do way better than that.
One of the positive things JFK did was establish the Presidential Fitness Program for schools with various goals for pullups, rope climbing, etc. Included running and walking milestones to be achieved. One of the tests was to hike/walk 26 miles in 8 hours or less. Our HS JROTC did 2 of these, with BSA knapsacks carrying lunch, extra socks, and canteens of water...was a walk in the park, even in street shoes and the thin soled tennis shoes of the day.
Check out some of the historic marches of Alexander the Great and Roman Legions carrying war paraphernalia etc.
