Why filter coffee is bad for you

Dropping coffee from your diet could reduce the risk of heart disease by as much as 15 per cent, according to a study.

Britons spend £850million a year on coffee. But experts suggest it can raise levels of cholesterol and homo-cysteine in the blood - both associated with heart disease and strokes.

There has been concern about the possible dangers of unfiltered coffee for some time but the more widelyconsumed filtered coffee has generally been given a clean bill of health.

The latest study suggests there may be a link between even filtered coffee and cardiovascular disease.

The team, led by Dr Benedicte Christensen of the Ulleval University Hospital in Oslo, concluded that compounds in coffee called terpenoids - which are only partially removed by filtering - were responsible for raising the heart disease risk.

Writing in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition today, they say abstaining from average amounts of coffee may lower the concentrations of both tHcy (total homocysteine) and total cholesterol.

Dr Christensen stud-ied a group of 183 Norwegian men and women, aged 24 to 69. Cholesterol and tHcy levels went down in those subjects who abstained from coffee.

Those who usually have an average of four cups of coffee per day could reduce their cholesterol-related risk of heart disease by 15 per cent and homocysteinerelated risk by ten per cent, the scientists say.

The conclusions were disputed, however, by Catherine Collins, chief dietician at St George's Hospital in London.

She said: 'If you're drinking six or ten cups of coffee a day, or if you are an elderly person with a history of heart disease or high cholesterol, you might want to think about moderating your intake. But I am not convinced it is a major problem.'

Relax everyone.

If coffee causes heart attacks, I would have died 20 years ago.

So, you’re good.

The Puritanical Leftists want to remove all pleasure from life. They’ve been trying to demonize coffee for decades and study after study has redeemed the brew.

I thought coffee filters were used to keep the coffee grounds in place and that's all. I didn't know that their purpose was to remove terpenoids. Who came up with that idea?

I can just see the next coffee filters on the market will say "New and improved! Removes 50% more terpenoids!"

I wouldn't believe a study of 183 people in Norway or any other country. One hundred eighty-three people means nothing. You posted a link to other studies involving large groups of people and those results are what I have seen over the past couple of years.

There is a Fox doctor who is on every weekend on Fox and he is promoting drinking coffee to all ages. His conclusions are upheld in the studies you posted. Here is some of those conclusions based on intensive wide population research. Older people need to drink coffee, and I do - two to four to six cups a day. Consider the rest in quotes:

The most recent meta-analyses on neurological disorders found that coffee intake was associated with lower risks of Parkinson’s disease, lower cognitive decline and a potential protective effect against Alzheimer’s disease (but certainly no harm).

A systematic review published in 2005 found that regular coffee consumption was associated with a significantly reduced risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, with the lowest relative risks (about a third reduction) seen in those who drank at least six or seven cups a day. The latest study, published in 2014, used updated data and included 28 studies and more than 1.1 million participants. Again, the more coffee you drank, the less likely you were to have diabetes. This included both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee.

Is coffee associated with the risk of death from all causes? There have been two meta-analyses published within the last year or so. The first reviewed 20 studies, including almost a million people, and the second included 17 studies containing more than a million people. Both found that drinking coffee was associated with a significantly reduced chance of death. I can’t think of any other product that has this much positive epidemiologic evidence going for it.

Some comments on properly filtering out unhealthy compouds in coffee, by Alan Adler, inventor of the AeroPress:

I had a bunch of metal filters fabricated by the photo-etching process which is a sort of a relative of the way silicon chips are made. The process allows you to make very, very fine holes, but they never tasted as good as paper filtering.

Along the way, I discovered that coffee that's made with metal filters, or maybe we should say coffee that is not made with a paper filter, contains two harmful oils, called cafestol and kahweol. They've been discovered to be the most powerful blood cholesterol raising substances ever found. So the people who drink coffee that's made with a metal filter typically have LDL cholesterol, which is about ten percent higher than people who drink paper filter coffee.

So I decided that even though some people said that they wanted a metal filter AeroPress, I couldn't with a good conscience produce it. However, there are a number of filters on the market from other manufacturers now. I asked the guy who runs The World Aeropress Championships if they were permitting metal filters in Aeropress competitions, which are judged solely on taste, and he said, yes, we allow them, but no metal filter brew has ever won a single heat.

This is from interview you can read here:

Non-issue for normal healthy adults. If you have known cholesterol concerns you are already probably being treated and compensate with your diet by substituting more fish oils and nuts. If you are diabetic, you also probably already increase your uptake of B12, B6, and B9 to help process out the homocysteine. Coffee has antioxidants that help reduce oxidative stress and drinking in moderation is not a bad thing for the average adult. Six to 10 cups seems a bit high for an average coffee drinker who more likely averages around 4 to 5 cups (6 oz cups) a day.

WHERE is the ‘found connection’ linking ‘filtered coffee’ to their study?

WHICH means of ‘filtered coffee’ are they investigating?

HOW are they making their findings?

WHEN did they perform this investigation?

WHO prompted these eggheads to do this silly thing?

To me, their, ahem, findings, prove nothing, except someone spent some money to dispense more bovine excrement.

What exactly do they mean by “unfiltered coffee”? As in not using a coffee filter? I use a french press at home that doesn’t require a filter. Should I be worried?

Either way I’m not giving it up. It’ll either be coffee or cocaine...

“Agreed! This is beyond ridiculous. EVERYTHING will kill you given enough time.”

Well it has been ABSOLUTELY proven that the chief cause of death is life.

Think about - when was the last time you heard about someone not alive dying?

So they’re saying coffee is- or isn’t- as dangerous for an old man as a hot young girlfriend?
Both improve one’s quality of life significantly.
And coffee won’t wreck your car and your bank account.
