American salt manufacturers began iodizing salt in the 1920's, in cooperation with the government, after people in some parts of the country were found to be suffering from goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland caused by an easily-preventable iodine deficiency. People require less than 225 micrograms of iodine a day. Seafood as well as sea salt contains iodine naturally and the supplement is unnecessary if there are sufficient quantities of either in one's diet. Note: Natural sea salt is a healthy replacement for ordinary table salt.

Oh dont you even start!(salvatating like a big dog)
I go on a binge (crate full at a time) every season and drive to a farm hours away about every two weeks during tamater season and that and my sea salts ‘mmm
Like a lil piece of Heaven on Earth
And the farm makes home made donuts on Sunday Morning (got git there before Church for the locals is over so I can grab a dozen and not get dirty looks as they are limited, just plain deep fried donuts)
Guilty in perhaps you/me can enjoy the salt of the earth while others are very restricted.
BTW I dont like sodium as in fast food/table salt.
It is the kosher/sea salts on fresh veggies/fruits that is orgasmic.
Viniger now is up there with salt and that is a whole new thread.
“MAKE YOUR OWN SEASON SALT
2 tbsp. salt
2 tbsp. paprika
1 tsp. ground pepper
1 tsp. onion salt
1 tsp. garlic salt”
How many pounds of each does that work out to be? Those quantities wouldn’t last me one meal...
I use kosher salt almost exclusively, just getting into some of the sea and smoked salts. One nice thing, a little bit goes a long way!
If you want a Mexican Flair, you could add cumin. :)
You’re on your own. I’m Math Impared. Only passed Algebra due to my short skirts and long legs in High School, LOL!
Well, isn't that strange. Not to make a hugh and series thing out of this, but ...
When I was a child, my grandmother gave me half an omlet ...
... but I eated it ... [smile]

Without iodine, goiters can form. Not too sure that idea has held up over the years though, but if so, one might rightly wonder, where did the ancestors grow up? :') Thanks sodpoodle.Seafood as well as sea salt contains iodine naturally and the supplement is unnecessary if there are sufficient quantities of either in one's diet.To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list. |

Salt was very good for neutralizing the bitterness of cheap coffee beans (the supermarket kind). I would add it to the ground up beans in a drip filter before pouring water inside.
This was pre-Starbucks. Now I buy better quality beans.
Bring some olive oil and balsamic to that party and you have a really good salad.
Here's a really ugly fish that is nevertheless good eats, the Patagonian Toothfish:
Also known as "Chilean Sea Bass." That little marketing gem turned a fish no one wanted into one of the most sought after catches.
Me? I need salt. About twice what a "average" (whatever that means) person needs.
If I don't get it, I get sick.
Do you usually BBQ?
If a person wanted to get one sampler, would you suggest The Artisan Smoke salt sampler?

I had no idea of the importance of iodized salt. I just remembered it from my childhood & school as being thyroid related. Apparently, there are far more health benefits.
The Flynn Effect that you referenced illustrates how ill-informed most of our power hungry politicians truly are. Wonder why we have not heard from the medical community and pharma. (Maybe because iodized salt is so inexpensive).

Almost one-third of the worlds people dont get enough iodine from food and water. The result in extreme cases is large goiters that swell their necks, or other obvious impairments such as dwarfism or cretinism. But far more common is mental slowness. When a pregnant woman doesnt have enough iodine in her body, her child may suffer irreversible brain damage and could have an I.Q. that is 10 to 15 points lower than it would otherwise be. An educated guess is that iodine deficiency results in a needless loss of more than 1 billion I.Q. points around the world.
Many of the Chilean Sea Bass being eaten in restaurants today are 50 years old...enjoy them while you can. They'll all be gone shortly.
BTW
Now with more people using salt without iodine the OB-GYN usually brings it up. If you have to cut back on salt then kelp tablets are a good substitute.
But in a number of third world countries the governments are not only aware of the benefits of iodine but they actively promote it. Salt is something even the poorest people tend to buy so iodized salt is a very efficient way to get iodine into their diet.
In fact in some places of the world a common childish taunt is "did your mother not get her iodine?" meaning that the other child is stupid.
One tidbit I learned when I was a teenager- a pinch of salt in just about anything will take away bitter flavours. Works nicely with coffee and beer.
