Without iodine, goiters can form. Not too sure that idea has held up over the years though, but if so, one might rightly wonder, where did the ancestors grow up? :') Thanks sodpoodle.
Seafood as well as sea salt contains iodine naturally and the supplement is unnecessary if there are sufficient quantities of either in one's diet.

Here's a really ugly fish that is nevertheless good eats, the Patagonian Toothfish:

Also known as "Chilean Sea Bass." That little marketing gem turned a fish no one wanted into one of the most sought after catches.
