The other main area of lying [besides health] centered on [John F. Kennedy's] curriculum vitae. In 1940 his thesis was written for him by a number of people, including Arthur Krock of the New York Times, and Joe's personal speechwriter, who described it as a 'very sloppy job, mostly magazine and newspaper clippings stuck together.' But, processed, it not only allowed Jack to graduate cum laude but also appeared in book form as Why England Slept. Old Joe and his men turned it into a 'bestseller,' partly by using influence with publishers such as Henry Luce, partly by buying 30,000-40,000 copies, which were secretly stored at the family compound in Hyannisport. It was the same story with Profiles in Courage, which began as a 'disorganised, somewhat incoherent melange from secondary sources' and was turned by professional writers into a readable book. By 1958 it had sold nearly 125,000 copies and, after intense lobbying by Joe, Krock, and other Kennedy satraps, it won Jack the Pulitzer prize for biography. Those who suggested the book was ghostwritten were sued for libel or even, at Joe's request, investigated by the FBI.
Old Joe's neatest trick was to turn Jack into a war hero. In view of Jack's health, all Joe's skill at manipulation was needed to get him into the navy, secure him an immediate commission, and advance him in the service, especially since, while a young officer working in naval intelligence, he was detected by the FBI having an affair with a Danish woman suspected of being a Nazi spy. Jack was in charge of a PT boat which was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer. Father Joe's management got him a medal for rescuing a crew member.
One of Johnson's sources is A Question of Character: The Life of John F. Kennedy, by Thomas C. Reeves.
"Camelot", huh?
“Don’t buy another vote, I won’t pay for a landslide.” Jos. P. Kennedy during the 1960 WV Democrat primary.
Later, JFK expanded on this, “I have just received the following telegram from my generous father; ‘Dear Jack: Don’t buy a single vote more than is necessary. I’ll help you win this election, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to pay for a landslide!’”
If you want the gory details read “The Dark Side of Camelot” by Seymour Hersh. You’ll wonder “why didn’t this get any mention or attention when it was published (in 1997)”... and then the answer will come to you: it’s about the Kennedys, stupid!
Very few of us seem to grasp that a PT boat was designed to outrun and out manuever a destroyer, rather than get run over by a destroyer.
I love asking members of the JFK fan club what exactly he ever did. They never mention his cutting of taxes but often try to give him credit for handling the Cuban Missile Crisis. It’s fun pointing out that if he hadn’t shown such weakness during the Bay of Pigs fiasco, the Soviets would never have dared to put missiles in Cuba
“I love asking members of the JFK fan club what exactly he ever did.”
It’s not what he did its like the song says “didn’t you love the things that he stood for?” (Wonder if somebody paid off Neil Diamond?)

My mother was strongly anti-Kennedy. As a kid back in Texas, I had an anti-Kennedy coloring book, and remember my mother’s anti-Kennedy reel to reel tapes.
The day he was assassinated, I clearly recall being confused at coming home from school when it was let out early and finding mother so distraught about it. At that moment Kennedy was no longer the enemy he had been, but our President.
And we haven't even broached the subject of ILLINOIS yet!
You are correct. You could also point out that he spent less time "standing" than he did in bed . . . Just sayin'.
As an 11 year old in 1960 I remember the talking heads knowingly speaking about the "late reporting precints" in Chicago and then presidential historian Teddy White (the Michael Beschloss of his day) saying, "We all know what's going on in Chicago and it's an outrage."
I wonder where the GREATEST fraud took place--in Illinois or in Texas.
Ships do on occasion run into each other at sea. In war time where they purposely keep their own visibily low, it was just dumb luck it happened with PT-109. Was Kennedy at fault, well technically yes since he was the Captain.
At least JFK served in the miltary, along with his brother Joe who died. JFK was lucky that he also did not die.
I may not like the Kennedys, especially the ones that continue to live off the memories of JFK, but I will respect the man that served during wartime, and was almost killed in that service.

For years I have been wondering if the Jap Destroyer knew they were there or not. I mean, how the hell does a PT actually get under and inside of the Destroyers gun range?
Not many can truthfully lay claim to an unblemished life. John F. Kennedy served the nation in war, directly fighting our country’s bitter enemy. I honor JFK and his military service. There was a time, a place, an America where the rich and powerful lobbied for their sons to receive military commissions proudly going into harms way.
Add to that the continuing myth that the Soviets removed the missiles because of the blockade and Kennedy ordering Defcon 2. The real reason was Castro and Guevara looking to take control of the missiles and launch them, starting WW3. Kruschev reconsidered the missiles in Cuba, and got them out.
And the timing of that song was sooo politically transparent. Even to a twelve year old. (I was for Nixon, just to p*$$ off my Roosevelt-liberal family.)
Some people knew old Joe’s background as a Nazi sympathizer. Thats why FDR fired him as ambassador to Britian...My father hated the Kennedy’s so much if he received a Kennedy 1/2 dollar at the store he’d throw it back at the cashier and say give me 2 quarters...He was a cop during prohibition and knew the Kennedy history of old Joe quite well...thats why Truman was once quoted as saying “Im not worried about the Pope in the White House, its the pop that I am worried about.”
LOL, I thought Kruschev was just responding to Bertrand Russell’s famous, frenetic letter to him and Kennedy, pleading for peace. Old Bertie was the original peacenik, and in fact invented the peace symbol, fashioned to represent an ICBM pointed downward.
