Scientists have uncovered heart disease in 3,500-year-old Egyptian mummies, suggesting the risk factors behind it are not just modern in nature.
Heart disease is often ascribed to modern risk factors, such as smoking, unhealthy diets rich in saturated fats, salt and processed sugars, or sedentary lifestyles. But then cardiologists touring the Egyptian National Museum of Antiquities in Cairo during a medical conference last year noticed the nameplate of the pharoah Merenptah, who ruled from 1213 B.C. to 1203 B.C. It read that when Merenptah died at roughly age 60, he was afflicted with atherosclerosis, or thickening of the arteries due to buildup of calcium, fat, cholesterol and other substances.

Food wrap ping.
Well next you are going to tell me that they DIED!
Caused by global warming, no doubt.
DaVinci died of atherosclerosis—and he was a vegetarian. He had discovered the disease in the bodies he had dissected, which is why he became a vegetarian. However, even he died of it—albeit old.
#4: No, it’s Bush’s fault.
True, liberal hatred travels thru time!

Thanks decimon. [creaking noise, anthropoid sarcophagus opens, a bandaged hand emerges, clutching an ancient scroll] "Hey look, a joke in hieroglyphics... uh, translates as, 'people who study mummies aren't wrapped too tight.'" /rimshot |

Well, doggies....The rich get gout and the poor get heart disease....
Hey, they had prosthetic toes, what more do they want. A big problem for older Egyptians (who were probably wealthy, or they’d not have lived so long) was tooth abscesses brought on by excessive tooth wear from eating the bread made with flour containing bits of stone from the grinding of the grain.
Can you imagine getting heart disease back then? You’re pretty much screwed, unless you want stone surgical instruments tinkering around in your insides while you’re still conscious.
Somewhere, I have the article of the prosthetic toe. I showed it to my podiatrist, and if it had not not been in an “accepted” mag, I think he would have dissed me.
I’ve seen lots of documentaries that contain tooth abscesses. Makes me glad I live in the day of penicillin!!
Perhaps the grinding mill was invented because of the abscesses?
(Just axin’...)
The Egyptians, the Italians...too bad they didn't know of the Mediterranean Diet.
Ya right.
The flour mill was invented because people got tired of grinding flour by hand.
After that was established, they began modifying it to saw wood and grind gun powder.
You never knew you had it. You just drop dead one day. That’s the way my maternal grandfather went.
Of course! Pounding the metate was too hard. Besides: food had to be palatable. Which is why fish were the fertilizer of choice. It made the food taste better!! ;o]
....and there is no new thing under the sun.
Why not? They WERE human.
You beat me to it. Regardless, reminds me of that old bumper sticker back in the 80’s:
Diet, exercise and die anyway.......
