Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

I don’t buy iceberg lettuce often but when we do have it, I whack it against the countertop and take out the stem. The lettuce keeps a lot longer without the core.

That is a great post. Brainstorming is wonderful and a good idea. Be sure you write down everything especially if it is silly. The more you laugh, the more creative you get and the more wonderful ideas will come to you. Don’t allow any “We can’t do that because...” discussions or comments. Everything is allowed. Granny is right, you will be amazed what great ideas surface when you let your creative side run free.

Checked out the source you gave me on sweet potatoes - Called, and they said that they had some, but closest shipping date would be June 26 and in order to get them they said to order one of their leftover assortments where they fill orders with a variety of their leftovers.

I was all set to try that but instead called an old farm/field/garden store that had changed hands a few years ago. He said he was completely out, but he was taking orders through today for Beauregard Sweet potatoes and that he would have them in by next Friday. Since they are such a long season crop, I figured 3 weeks earlier would definitely be best, and the beauregard is a 90-95 day compared to some that are 120-140 day, and the beauregard is a good tasting very large root heavy producer. So I ordered from them.

Thanks for the connection though - they have a ton of varieties though - maybe next year I will order from them much earlier while there is a choice of varieties.

According to them they are receiving more than double the orders from last year, and are sold out of many.

I’d better get started soon on building that pallet root cellar we had info on here a ways back. I will probably fill that 4X4X8 cellar with white and sweet potatoes, carrots, butternuts and even pumpkins...

Gardening Without Irrigation: or without much, anyway / Solomon, Steve

http://infomotions.com/etexts/gutenberg/dirs/etext03/grdwr10.htm

[snipped, from beginning of book]

The following year I grew two parallel gardens. One, my “insurance
garden,” was thoroughly irrigated, guaranteeing we would have plenty
to eat. Another experimental garden of equal size was entirely
unirrigated. There I tested larger plots of species that I hoped
could grow through a rainless summer.

By July, growth on some species had slowed to a crawl and they
looked a little gnarly. Wondering if a hidden cause of what appeared
to be moisture stress might actually be nutrient deficiencies, I
tried spraying liquid fertilizer directly on these gnarly leaves, a
practice called foliar feeding. It helped greatly because, I
reasoned, most fertility is located in the topsoil, and when it gets
dry the plants draw on subsoil moisture, so surface nutrients,
though still present in the dry soil, become unobtainable. That
being so, I reasoned that some of these species might do even better
if they had just a little fertilized water. So I improvised a simple
drip system and metered out 4 or 5 gallons of liquid fertilizer to
some of the plants in late July and four gallons more in August. To
some species, extra fertilized water (what I call “fertigation”)
hardly made any difference at all. But unirrigated winter squash
vines, which were small and scraggly and yielded about 15 pounds of
food, grew more lushly when given a few 5-gallon,
fertilizer-fortified assists and yielded 50 pounds. Thirty-five
pounds of squash for 25 extra gallons of water and a bit of extra
nutrition is a pretty good exchange in my book.

The next year I integrated all this new information into just one
garden. Water-loving species like lettuce and celery were grown
through the summer on a large, thoroughly irrigated raised bed. The
rest of the garden was given no irrigation at all or minimally
metered-out fertigations. Some unirrigated crops were foliar fed
weekly.

Everything worked in 1991! And I found still other species that I
could grow surprisingly well on surprisingly small amounts of
water[—]or none at all. So, the next year, 1992, I set up a
sprinkler system to water the intensive raised bed and used the
overspray to support species that grew better with some moisture
supplementation; I continued using my improvised drip system to help
still others, while keeping a large section of the garden entirely
unwatered. And at the end of that summer I wrote this book.

What follows is not mere theory, not something I read about or saw
others do. These techniques are tested and workable. The
next-to-last chapter of this book contains a complete plan of my
1992 garden with explanations and discussion of the reasoning behind
it.

In _Water-Wise Vegetables _I assume that my readers already are
growing food (probably on raised beds), already know how to adjust
their gardening to this region’s climate, and know how to garden
with irrigation. If you don’t have this background I suggest you
read my other garden book, _Growing Vegetables West of the
Cascades,_ (Sasquatch Books, 1989).

Steve Solomon

continues.

If you have a sinus infection, boil it in a pan and drape a towel over your head and the pan, and breathe in the steam ....it will cure it.

That’s good to know. It’s the only herb I have left around my garden beds that is thriving in our hot sun. <<<

Oregano essential oil is a healer, kills the bacteria and? it is now being tested in hospitals and labs.

I use it on sores and for sinus infection.

How to Make Your Own Non-Drying Anti-Bacterial Hand Sanitizer
by yellowstar2000

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera
Introduction
Are you concerned about toxic chemicals in your sanitizer or the drying effects of alcohol on your skin? Learn how to create a non-drying all natural and “organic” version of Anti-Bacterial Hand Sanitizer
Instructions
Difficulty: Easy
Things You’ll Need

* 24 oz. Natural Aloe Vera Gel
* 1-3 TBLS of quality Witch Hazel
* 15 drops Lavender Essential Oil
* 5 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
* 15 drops Lemon Essential Oil
* OR 30 drops of Young Living Theives Essential Oil Blend
* or if you have the following essential oils use them instead of the above recipe
* 24 ounces Aloe Vera Gel
* 8 drops Lavender Essential Oil
* 3 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
* 8 drops Citrus Essential Oil (like Lemon or Orange)
* 5 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil
* 4 drops Thyme Essential Oil
* 3 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
* 3 drops Oregano Essential Oil
* 1 ounce glass bottle or jar
* small plastic bottles
* or just use the Aloe Vera Gel bottles

Steps
1
Step One
First add your purifying Essential Oils one at a time to the 1 ounce glass bottle and swirl to mix. You can use either recipe listed, they both work well. It just depends on which essential oils you have or want to use. I prefer the latter as it has a more pleasant aroma. I also add a few drops of Neroli (orange blossom) Essential Oil if I have any.
2
Step Two
Then add 1-3 TBLS of Witch Hazel to your Essential Oil blend, swirl to mix and add that to the Aloe Vera Gel and mix well. I like to use a stick blender to speed the process and ensure proper blending. You can also just add it directly to the aloe and shake, but it doesn’t seem to mix as well that way. Once the Essential Oils and Witch Hazel are evenly dispersed in the Aloe Vera Gel...Walla! You now have a homemade all natural non-drying anti-bacterial hand sanitizer.! (Boy, that’s a mouthful isn’t it?
3
Step Three
Once you’ve prepared your sanitizer you can put it in any kind of bottle or container you wish. I prefer to use my recycled hotel shampoo and conditioner bottles, because they’re small and can be easily thrown in your bag, or in your glove compartment, or medicine chest...wherever you might need it. I also make one for the bathroom, and one for the kitchen in my recycled pump-bottles. They come in very handy. You can even use this on a sunburn for a little relief without drying out the burned skin.
Tips & Warnings

* This non-drying sanitizer may also be used on a sunburn for a little ‘chilly’ relief ( I keep one in the fridge in the summertime just for that purpose)
* Go Green and clean out your empty bottles and reuse them! (Make sure they are disinfected and dry before re-filling).
* Please do not add extra essential oils to this recipe. Essential Oils are very strong and if you’ve never used essential oils before; as with any natural plants you may have an allergy and should perform a patch test. This can be done easily by mixing one drop of the essential oil with approx. 1 TBLS olive oil (or similar), run into skin on the inside of your elbow, apply a bandage, and wait 24 hours to see if there is any reaction.

Raw Vinegar: A Powerful Catabolic Fermented Food

Apple Cider Vinegar is nutrient dense with over 93 different compounds. It is pectin rich which helps balance cholesterol. It is a safe weight management food and has the ability to fight joint pain.

Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is a naturally fermented food. Fermented ACV contains enzymes which create a catalytic action on body fat, acting like a solvent. Enzymes in fermented ACV help attack and dissolve larger quantities of accumulated fat. This same chemical principle is a meat tenderizer. When you drink about 2 tablespoons of ACV in a raw juice or water the enzymes create an emulsifying or lipotropic action.

Make sure you choose Raw Apple Cider Vinegar: One of our favorites

***

Anti- Epidemic Vinegar

This is the historic recipe known as ‘’Thieves’ Vinegar” used during the time of Black Plague.

You will need:

1 quart of organic raw apple cider vinegar

1 pound garlic cloves

8 oz. comfrey root

4 oz. each of oak bark, marshmallow root, mullein flowers, rosemary flowers, lavender flowers, wormwood, black walnut leaves

12 oz. vegetable glycerin

Make a tea from each herb by soaking in clean spring or distilled water for 12 hours, then boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Let steep for 30 minutes. Then strain each herb and simmer again reducing the amount to one-half to concentrate the tea. Juice or squeeze the garlic, and add to the mixture of teas and vinegar. Stir in the glycerin thoroughly.

Store best in an amber glass bottle.

Take 1 -3 teaspoons during an epidemic, or 1 teaspoon hourly if someone has a serious communicable dis-ease.

***

Vinegar for gastic distress

1 teaspoon of organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a glass of pure water
about 20 minutes before meals reduces reflux.

Chamomile tea, or the tea with added tincture, rebalances gastric acidity.

A simple glass of water sipped slowly (no ice) reduces stomach acid.

***

Long term side effect of stomach acid blockers such as Pepcid, Tagamet, Zantac, Prilosec - Potentially harmful acidity develops in the tissues of the body when the system’s ability to eliminate the acids that are produced (metabolic waste, acid forming foods, and the system’s various stress mechanisms) is reduced. The stomach is one of the primary venting mechanisms for this build up of hydrogen ions (acids are typified by an abundance of such ions) and when our stomach’s acid producing mechanisms are pharmaceutically inhibited, the hydrogen ion concentrations become too abundant to be efficiently eliminated by other pathways of elimination. Consequently, the acids build up in the tissues and fluid compartments of the body, where they greatly interfere with the normal cellular functions. The overly acidic condition of the intercellular fluid compartment makes it an ideal breeding ground for harmful micro-organisms, creating an enormous burden on the immune system. This build-up can lead to fatigue, poor mental and emotional health and eventual chronic degenerative illness.

Pasteurization Is the heating process intended to remove potential problem bacteria from consumable liquids such as milk, juices etc. However the heat process of pasteurization will also remove delicate nutrients and enzymes that may constitute a major portion of the nutritional value of that food.

In the case of Bragg’s Raw Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, pasteurization would eliminate the “mother”, a major health-giving factor of our vinegar. The strand of complex proteins constitute important delicate enzymes that are a major part of Bragg ACV’s health properties.

E Coli and other harmful bacteria Raw Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, unlike juices or ciders, CONTAINS NO SUGARS which would be the growth medium for potentially harmful bacteria such as E Coli. Additionally the high acidic nature of ACV assures that none of these bacteria could exist or propagate

Vinegar may help dieters eat less - Vinegar reduces the body’s insulin response to a carbohydrate meal and increases satiety, say Swedish researchers.

Increasing intake of the common flavouring at mealtimes or consuming it in a drink may therefore help dieters eat less and reduce cravings brought on by sugar peaks after meals.

Lead author of the study, Elin Ostman from Lund University, said her team saw a significant dose-response relationship between the amount of vinegar consumed by 12 healthy subjects and their glucose and insulin responses to white bread.

But she told NutraIngredients.com that the most interesting finding was the effect on satiety as this had not been measured in a previous study by the same group.

“There was a direct relationship between increased acetic acid and satiety,” she said.

For the study, the volunteers were given three amounts of vinegar (18, 23 and 28 mmol acetic acid) diluted in water in combination with a portion of white wheat bread containing 50g available carbohydrates after an overnight fast.

Bread served without vinegar was used as a reference meal.

Blood samples taken during the next two hours assessed glucose and insulin levels while satiety was measured with a subjective rating scale.

“The satiety scores after the highest level of vinegar were rated significantly higher than the reference at 30, 90 and 120 minutes after the meal,” write the researchers in this month’s issue of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (vol 59, issue 9, pp983- 988).

Olstrom noted that satiety is notoriously difficult to measure.

“It could be interesting to measure it in other ways like looking at the voluntary intake at the next meal,” she said.

However the significant dose response relationship between levels of acetic acid and blood glucose and serum insulin responses confirmed the results of a previous trial by the group.

Both glucose and insulin responses were about 25 per cent lower at 90 minutes when the volunteers had consumed the highest level of vinegar compared to the reference meal.

This level of vinegar is equivalent to about two to three tablespoons.

Interest in vinegar as a health food is increasing, as people become more interested in natural remedies.

Olstrom said her study could explain why some people feel a benefit from drinking a glass of vinegar and water before a meal.

But while few vinegar makers in Europe allude to health benefits, in Japan vinegar-based drinks have taken off in recent months, owing to beliefs in their medicinal properties.

Earlier this year, the Japan Times reported that the country’s largest vinegar maker, Mizkan Group, had seen the market for drinking vinegar nearly triple to 21.46 billion yen between March and August 2004 from 7.57 billion yen in the same period in 2000. 9/7/2005

FOUR THIEVES: vinegar & oil recipes
December 11, 2007 · 4 Comments

I waited patiently, and then, when I really needed it, I got what I had asked for.

Four Thieves is some nifty stuff. I am using the oil with good results to date. The Four Thieves vinegar is very good, as well.

FOUR THIEVES VINEGAR: ANTIVIRAL GERMICIDE Possible Alternative for Flu Shots

Herbal lore has it that, while the Plague was raging in France, a rash of burglaries of plague victims’ homes was discovered. No effort was made, however, to apprehend the thieves, as it was assumed that they would soon succumb to the contagion in the homes they had robbed..

The thieves carried on their crime spree for some time, and people began to wonder why they had not become ill and die. It was then that the authorities began to pursue them… to discover the secret of their immunity to the Plague.

Once the burglars had been apprehended, they struck a bargain with the authorities, that they should be set free in exchange for revealing the secret to their immunity to the Plague.

It was then that the four thieves revealed the herbal disinfectant formula that rendered them immune to the Plague.

Current theorists suggest that this formula, now called “Four Thieves Vinegar”, may offer protection against fearsome possible threats, such as the flu, smallpox, and biological weapons, which concern us today, as all of its ingredients are either strong anti-bacterial agents, or have potent anti-viral properties.

FOUR THIEVES VINEGAR

1 part sage, dried
1 part thyme, dried
1 part lemon balm (melissa), dried
1 part hyssop, dried
1 part peppermint, dried
1 handful garlic cloves
Raw (unpasteurized), organic apple cider vinegar

• In a glass jar, place all dry ingredients.
• Add raw (unpasteurized), organic apple cider vinegar to cover
• Place jar in a cool place and let sit, at room temperature, for six weeks.
• Strain off herbs and garlic, and decant to a glass bottle or jar with a tight fitting lid.

HOW TO USE FOUR THIEVES VINEGAR
• Take a teaspoonful several times daily.
• Add to salads either directly or in a salad dressing.
• For personal protection, add a teaspoonful to bath water.
• Use as a topical spray for disinfecting surfaces and/or skin

ALTERNATIVE FOUR THIEVES VINEGAR
wormwood
meadowsweet
juniper berries
rosemary
camphor
sage
cinnamon
cloves
white wine vinegar

FOUR THIEVES OIL
1 part eucalyptus
1 part rosemary
1 part cinnamon
1 part clove
1 part lemon
Carrier oil (olive, jojoba, or your choice)
Mix

I put 50 drops of each oil in a 2 oz. bottle and then top it off with jojoba oil (I like jojoba oil because it seems to never go rancid).

An alternative recipe:

200 drops Clove Bud Oil
175 drops Lemon Oil
100 drops Cinnamon Oil
75 drops Eucalyptus Oil
50 drops Rosemary

Mix with jojoba oil.

APPLICATIONS:

• Apply 1-2 drops of Four Thieves on the bottoms of the feet and on the nape of the neck.
• Apply under the arms and on the chest.
• Diffuse for 20 minutes or less at work or at home.

A PERSONAL NOTE:

I have used Four Thieves for the itch that accompanied a nasty rash that doctors could not diagnose (where is House when you need him?)… I originally applied the Four Thieves oil because I was worried about possible infection after scratching myself bloody in my sleep. The Four Thieves smarted quite a bit when I first applied it, but, then, miraculously, the itch subsided and allowed me to have a life. Although the rash did not disappear, it did diminish markedly every time I applied the oil.

If you don’t want to make your own Vinegar of the Four Thieves, you can find it at http://www.ForMyKidsOnline.com. (Although this Vinegar is for disinfecting only–you shouldn’t ingest it because of the rue, wormwood, and camphor!)

Just thought i would share that maybe u should be checked for diabeties/pre-diabeties, because before i was first diagnosed with diabeties i had this horrible rasth on my inner thighs belly under my neck on my arms and i would itch my self till i bled so many times i cant count, i still have some of my old clothes that are spotted with dots of blood every where, anyways the doctors said they didnt know why i had it or what it was they thought it was fungal but nothing helped, anyways not long after i was diagnosed with diabeties and i began to notice that when i kept my sugar in check the rast would go away or minimise greatly and when it was out of control for any amount of time i would get the itchy rash again… my doctors never put 2 n 2 together but my sister who studies herbs did she says she thinks it has to do with the skin being used as a filter because the liver is being taxed by the diabeties, so now i try to keep my sugar in balance so the rash stays gone…. maybe u should be checked, if my doctor never put it together maybe yours isnt either.

I have been looking for 4 thieve oil because I don’t want to try and make it on my own. I found one that smells really great and is a super low price here: http://www.100pureessentialoils.com/site/1562898/product/4_thieves_oil
I LOVE this stuff – it works really well and lasts a very long time. Plus it really smells good. I can never get my own blends to smell this nice. they must use really good oils to make it.

Thanks!
JC

[Granny note: smell or taste good, is not a sign that it is a good healing product.

Thieves Vinegar, should smell bad..........or so I have always heard.

A nice room spray, can “smell good”, if that is all it is used for.

I don’t buy iceberg lettuce often but when we do have it, I whack it against the countertop and take out the stem. The lettuce keeps a lot longer without the core.<<<

So do I, and then I wrap it in paper towels and put in plastic bag.

A couple of paper towels will help greens to keep, they absorb the moisture, but supply it back, to keep it fresh.

I prefer the white and no print on the paper towels.

you will be amazed what great ideas surface when you let your creative side run free.<<<

I have been surprised a couple times at the results of my thoughts, when placed on paper and not rolled around in my empty head.

Good, I am glad you found a source for the sweet potatoes.

I enjoyed doing business with Sandhill and loved watching the company grow, for he is or was a full time teacher, who took in teenage boys that had problems.

It has to help the kids, to work with him, plants and poultry.

When I first ordered from Sandhill, he grew his own seeds.

3 weeks is worth going local and knowing what you get and have in the ground.
