Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

Learn to shoot. Learn to hunt. Learn to grow veges. Learn to hide. Keep enough gold on hand to pay your way anywhere. Learn basic medical skills.

Have a plan in case society breaks down.

Then, go about living your daily lives. Never live in fear. If you fear something, learn how to defeat it, if your fear is realized. Then, you will not need worry about survival.<<<

Excellent advice and I suspect that society is already breaking down, listen to the police scanner for any town and you will see that it is getting worse, daily.

I've noticed an uptick beginning months ago. Even in areas that were traditionally quiet affluent neighborhoods. Radio traffic and scanner traffic proves this.

Traditional American values have become a victim of this hope and change mentality that in reality is nothing more than a smoke screen to cover an agenda that is destroying our society.

Can't we all get along, let's not offend anyone, cradle to the grave Govt. intrusion, America is mean and hateful, apologizing for American policy and the things we use to cherish, stomping on our constitution, a quota system that puts a priority on race and gender over merit, giving socialist unions the power to dictate policy to our corporations, releasing selected information that is intended to make our military and our intel. community look bad, bowing to Muslim royalty that stands for everything we once despised, embracing a philosophy that was once criminal promoted by the likes of Bill Ayres and others that hate our country and way of life and hope for our destruction. etc., etc...

Is it any wonder we are seeing a break down in our society? Isn't it great that the liberals and elitists can feel good about themselves as they drive in their limo's to swank parties, attend fundraisers that promote anti-American values but puts their mother earth above ordinary folks, then drive back to their McMansions and pat themselves on the back for all their good works that they believe "karma" will reward them for...just because they have helped elect a hope and change socialist/communist/Marxist that as an added bonus happens to be a minority and illegal immigrant. May God have mercy on us a nation because I feel we are headed for judgment because of our government that is anti everything that our nation was founded upon.

Sorry about the rant. It just gets worse every freakin day.

The police blog in our local paper is getting longer.

Just knowing you have made preparations, no matter how small or large, is a weight off your back.

Can do all that except the gold part ... where can you buy gold? What sort of denomination?

My opinion is you can't eat gold or silver. Just my primitive way of thinking.

“Growing and Harvesting Peanuts “

I bought peanuts to plant this year. Got everything in the garden on Monday, except the peanuts. Hubby didn’t want to plant them, as he thinks they won’t grow. I’ll see if I can find a place to sneak some in and see what happens. The weather is kinda cold for this time of year and lots of rain. I don’t think the soil has had time to warm up real good yet.

I hope not. Just being preprared for whatever may happen within my means which at the present doesn’t include extra money for gold or silver. Been my experience that a self-reliant, humble way of life trumps most things that happens on the bad side, which seems to me is happening now in spades.

“Prayers for your sister, Granny.<<<

Thanks, she will need them as she is past 60 years old, so has to compete with the young ones.”

Sorry to hear about your sister getting laid off. Any updates? I will also pray that she can find something.

Last Friday, hubby’s boss talked to him about another pay cut, but wasn’t specific. He asked Terry to think about what we could get by on. Well, Wednesday, his boss told him what he needed to pay Terry in order to keep the business afloat. It amounts to about a 50% pay cut! Guess we will be tightening our belts - we’ll have to put some new holes in there to tighten it up that much. :) But, we are thankful he still has a job and some income. He has been looking for another job for a while now, just in case. Last week I applied for a part time job, but haven’t heard anything.

“Growing and Harvesting Peanuts “

I planted mine Monday... we have had about 3 inches of rain since - Just checked, and they aren’t up yet, but should be by this weekend. Just be sure they are in full sun and that the soil is sandy loam - if you have 90-120 days (depending on variety)before frost, they should grow.

I think they are just about the most fun to grow. Seeing that spikelet grow down from each flower to form the underground peanuts always amazes me. Don’t know why I skipped several years without planting them, but am looking forward to them this year.

>>all kinds of spuds! Grabbed a few varieties of reds, golds, and white potatoes<<

Great!!
Now if I can just find some sweet potato slips, I will have my early garden complete (and the spuds get here and they are in the ground).

It is amazing sometimes how you find just what you need from stores you didn’t even know existed.

Tillers can really work you out... LOL
That is why I have resorted to the pull behind 36” one so I can just pull it while sitting on the tractor/mower seat for the main tilling.

I have opted to plant in shorter rows this year ( just more of them) and to use my high wheel cultivator more - gives me exercise and I get to pause more with shorter rows. The ground cover also helps tremendously in reducing the weeding task too.

Lots of wisdom there.... While I do have some silver (older silver coins which I own at face value), I look at it as Hmmm, an ounce of silver or a good hoe... or an ounce of silver and two cases of canning jars. I just ask which gives me more security - that is an easy choice for me...

>>>The police blog in our local paper is getting longer.<<<

Only thing that is longer is the repo auctions in our paper.

Then there is that new category coming on strong... Ads that say ‘Friends or Family of xxxxxxx xxxxx please contact xyz Undertakers to claim his/her remains.’

No mater how much they say things are improving, that last item tells me more than anything they say. I haven’t seen ads like that for many many years.

Do a Google News search for survivalist, survivalists, survivalism, stockpiling food, guns or ammo, self-reliant, or any combination. Most hits come back to local media articles that show MSM doesn't have a clue what middle America is thinking or talking about.

But I'm patient - I'll get something eventually.
Maybe Next time.

You know, I do that same search procedure from time to time and every time, I end up just shaking my head at how out of touch they are. But then I remember that they were trained to look at the 5 W’s plus How (Who, What, Where, Why, When). Sustainable living does not lend itself to ‘Jack and the Bean Stalk’ extremes that they really need to sell their news.

Only when many are starving the large numbers and the stark contrast be evident enough for them to really start to examine how survivalists are successful.

A few months ago they were reporting that canning supply sales were way up - 11% ahead of 2007 - Now this year for the first 3 months it is already 30% ahead of 2008 and we aren’t even close to the peak of the canning season.

If we only had someone in the WH with the moxie to lay it out for people and to instruct the Cooperative Extension Service to immediately start scheduling programs on growing, preserving and preparing food, as well as other skills, instead of having First Lady play in the dirt a bit for photo ops, people would be much better served. We have a couple of generations who have never needed to grow anything but a few flowers, and then only if the gardener or landscaper didn’t do it for them.

My philosophy has always been to treat my unprepared neighbors when they are hurting like from an ice or snow storm where the power goes off. I take my Jeep, load it up, Generator on the back, a couple of 22 quart stainless steel pots of soup and a couple of dozen loaves of homemade bread and 3 5 gallon water jugs. While I recharge their freezer, I plug my inverter in and let them watch the TV (you would be amazed the withdrawal from that) and ladle out soup for them. (I carry a kerosene stove to heat it again if they cook with electricity. I even cut the trees or branches across their driveways using an electric chain saw and the inverter while they eat and watch TV while the freezer runs to keep their food from spoiling. When they try to pay me, I always tell them that the fee is for them to prepare themselves too and go out and help someone else when they need it. It is amazing how many almost insist I just take the money so they won’t have to uphold the part of the bargain I am calling for.

I really think that those efforts on my part have improved the preparedness undertakings of many of them - plus, they are much more reliable now as helpers if I need them for an emergency if TSHTF in a big way. I would have no qualms about sharing with them IF they participated in helping with the production or preservation.

Even the mailman (who I had pulled out of snow drifts a couple of times and who knows how much I garden, asks me questions about where he can get this or that... a couple of weeks ago, he asked if I knew anywhere he could get some spaghetti squash seeds - I told him to wait a minute - came in the house and put some in a seed envelop for him... He was ecstatic. In return, if I have anything that might get wet or stolen from the mailbox, he now comes truckin to the house and puts it on my front porch. All for some spaghetti squash seeds...

Keep your posts coming - we all benefit from them.
