Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

Tonight on Hannity’s show one of the guys on his Great American Panel said the chatter is at the level it was just before 9/11.

I meant there was more internet chatter among Islamic groups, just like before 9-11.

Yes, the chatter is up and everyone is getting in on the act and offering up threats to attack in the west.

They will and it is not far away, for as a rule, they talk of attack and not of bioweapons and nuclear. Those are saved for the big attacks.

Yes, and the only problem is we do not know which country.

The irrational fear of this petite lady means only one thing to me: God is with her, guiding her, and the enemies of God hate it and her.<<<

I will agree with above.

Levi was very clear that he was not wanting to go to court, that he would rather solve it with talking to them.

I have heard it as fact, on the news every hour since my post, a bit here and there, about the trial for the baby.

America’s powerful agribusiness lobby has hit back at Michelle Obama’s decision to make her new White House kitchen garden entirely organic, urging her to consider the use of appropriate “crop protection products”.<<<

My dirty mind makes me want to ask “How much of a donation tot he campaign fund will they have to make, to get her into using chemicals?”

This may get interesting, as I recall the head Gardner, for the Victory Garden, is one of the top Chefs at the White House.

Subject: Next Winter Olympics

Now that Vancouver has won the chance to host the 2010 Winter Olympics,
these are some questions people from all over the world are asking. Believe
it or not these questions about Canada were posted on an International
Tourism Website. Obviously the answers are a joke;but the questions were
really asked!

Q:I have never seen it warm on Canadian TV, so how do the plants
grow(England)
A. We import all plants fully grown and then just sit around and watch them
die.

Q:Will I be able to see Polar Bears in the street? (USA )
A: Depends on how much you’ve been drinking.

Q:I want to walk from Vancouver to Toronto — can I follow the Railroad
tracks? ( Sweden )
A: Sure, it’s only Four thousand miles, take lots of water.

Q:Is it safe to run around in the bushes in Canada? (Sweden )
A: So it’s true what they say about Swedes.

Q: Are there any ATM’s (cash machines) in Canada? Can you send me a list of
them in Toronto ,Vancouver , Edmonton and Halifax? ( England )
A: What, did your last slave die?

Q:Can you give me some information about hippo racing in Canada? (USA )
A: A-fri-ca is the big triangle shaped continent south of Europe .. Ca-na-da
is that big country to your North...oh forget it. Sure, the hippo racing is
every Tuesday night in Calgary. Come naked.

Q:Which direction is North in Canada? ( USA )
A: Face south and then turn 180 degrees Contact us when you get here and
we’ll send the rest of the directions.

Q: Can I bring cutlery into Canada?( England )
A: Why? Just use your fingers like we do .

Q: Can you send me the Vienna Boys’ Choir schedule? ( USA )
A: Aus-t ri-a is that quaint little country bordering Ger-man-y, which
is...oh forget it. Sure, the Vienna Boys Choir plays every Tuesday night in
Vancouver and in Calgary , straight after the hippo races. Come naked.

Q: Do you have perfume in Canada? ( Germany )
A: No, WE don’t stink.

Q: I have developed a new product that is the fountain of youth. Where can I
sell it in Canada? (USA )
A: Anywhere significant numbers of Americans gather.

Q: Can you tell me the regions in British Columbia where the female
population is smaller than the male population? ( Italy )
A: Yes, gay nightclubs .

Q: Do you celebrate Thanksgiving in Canada? ( USA)
A: Only at Thanksgiving.

Q: Are there supermarkets in Toronto and is milk available all year round? (
Germany )
A: No, we are a peaceful civilization of Vegan hunter/gathers. Milk is
illegal.

Q: I have a question about a famous animal in Canada, but I forget its name.
It’s a kind of big horse with horns. ( USA )
A: It’s called a Moose. They are tall and very violent, eating the brains of
anyone walking close to them. You can scare them off by spraying yourself
with human urine before you go out walking.

Q: Will I be able to speak English most places I go?(USA )

A: Yes, but you will have to learn it first.

Please send this on to any Canadian (or others) who you think will enjoy it
as much as I did.

Because Everyone In Canada Lives In An Igloo

Mornin’ folks.

I’ve been so busy with spring that I don’t freep. I’m not sure when people do this thing called “spring cleaning” because I am so busy outside in spring that the house just falls to pieces. I can’t keep up. Got laundry stacked up, both clean and unfolded and dirty. Mud on floors from tracking in and out from yard. Dust from wind blowing in open windows. etc... but I love it.

Have almost all my food in the ground for the season. Got a few more seedling melons to set out this weekend. And I didn’t get any sweet potato slips yet as no one here has any in stock so have to order some.

Have had a “Plant Sale” sign in the yard and made cash from my greenhouse growing. Sold a couple hundred plants. My tomatoes, peppers and squash were all gone in one weekend but I’ve got more that are about ready to put out for sale again. LOTS of people who have never grown anything before stopping to buy. I get the chance to expound on my gardening knowledge on a regular basis trying to tell them everything they need to know in 15 minutes. And folks don’t realize that it’s a trial and error endeavor to garden. I have now earned the label “The Plant Lady” around this small town. I like it!

Posting now, but will still not be around much. So much to do. And my taters have bloomed and my onions are fixing to so about to begin some harvest! I know some of ya’ll haven’t even gotten to last frost date yet and that’s probably hard to fathom but it was 96 degrees here yesterday and I’ve got lots of work to do.

For me it was twice as funny as the source is not a site that sends out jokes....from them I get the latest terror threats.

Yes, they will have an extra large crowd on race day, if all are nakid....and all bumpy from mosquito bites.

Glad that you smiled at it too.

The Plant Lady, a fitting name for you.

Wonderful that the plants sold so well, a good sign of people eating.

You have been on my mind, as the Hoya Carnosa plant has its first flower, a pen pal sent it to me as cuttings 10 years ago and it had been in her family for 3 generations, I need to start some cuttings from it, but am now afraid that I will get one that intended to flower.

My sister still has not decided on when she is coming.

Don’t over do it and who cares if the laundry piles up, you don’t need many clothes in the summer...wear a wet towel and you will get more help in the garden.

Thinking of you, always makes me smile, be happy and have fun........
