Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

I already feed a family of Raccoons. Every night, I call, “Kitty, kitty, here kitty, kitty, kitty” and they come running. They don’t know they aren’t Kitties.

LOL! How cute! (TW, does the kitty get any food?)

Pretty? ... She’s Sophia Loren in a Chamber maids apron preparing good food while tasting everything. That babe can talk with food in her mouth and a man would never notice.

And that photo of her much younger doesn’t even do her justice! To appreciate her, one must see her in motion, in the kitchen, and hear that pleasant voice with light British accent.

>>So it worked just as described then?<<

LOL Really, CB, GG would NOT give you a bum steer...

You can use the O2 absorbers if you want, but they really aren’t needed... If it were me, I would save them for something else...

Oh, Welcome back!

>>>She’s Sophia Loren<<<

Oh my, I’ve seen Sophia Loren on a flight to Chicago once... If she looks as good as Sophia (who even looks fantastic without makeup) WOW...

I’m gonna have to check that show out...

Unfortunately that tool is nothing new. Noncompliant women were quite often locked up in psychiatric facilities here in American in the 20s and into the early 30s.

LOL! I can see you are a mite smitten. And the reasons you watch the show are not the ones I would. I won't even ask about the recipes.....you probably haven't noticed that there are any ;)

Oh, I know you wouldn’t tell us wrong! It’s only if I follow instructions wrong....

Well, I have nothing else to use the oxygen absorbers for right now. Or in the next 6 months. I have about 2 years worth of grains and legumes and other stuff already in superpails with mylar and oxygen absorbers or in cans with ‘em as well. My ‘pile’ of stuff is growing outside of the quarter of a bedroom that I vowed I would keep it to. ;) So I better stop where I am on that. When it starts spilling out into the hallway, I’ll be banished from the house most likely.

Ok, quick question here. Close your eyes - after reading the question that is ;)

What is the shape of her nose? (ie, short and cute, long and straight, or whatever else there is)

(I’ll get you haven’t noticed THAT feature on the lady...)

Oh there are recipes ... and she wields knives with aplumb. One of my favorite episodes of Nigella Bites was on salads, especially salads that children will eat ... she has--I think--two boys or a boy and a girl.

I do have a strange brain, though. I have this odd ability to hear the voice of someone I've listened to when reading soemthing they've written. So many voices, so few hours in the day. ;^)

Cooking is one of my current hobbies. I'm experimenting with a special creation of mine for icebox pies, using Instant puddings and flavored yogurts instead of milk ... makes a much thicker pudding, pie standards thick even. I'm making a Rasberry one tonight, to eat in two days (best flavoring after a day in the fridge beacuse the twang of the yogurt is gone by then).

I would cut a piece of one of these pies for Nigella, if I had the chance of course.

Actually, her nose is a rather odd feature of her face. She has a similar nose to an actress in Hollywood, with a long rather starigth nose, with a slight bump in the middle and squared on the tip. ... I don’t get sidetracked that easily.

Sounds like the classic nose on many statues in Rome. Or probably anywhere in Italy, but I remember them most clearly from Rome. Does she have an accent?

Kinda like you're living in a movie?

If she's got kids, you better back off till they're grown ;). We don't need MORE kids from broken homes, ya know!

Unfortunately that tool is nothing new.<<<

Russia has started using it again in the past couple years, they had one of the Anna P. type reporters in one for awhile, I was following her, via Struwwelpeter and saw photos of her before and after, it was bad.

Her crime, talking bad about the gov....they put her in the hospital, when she went to renew her drivers license ...La Russophobe did have the series on her, sorry the name is gone from my mind.

I fully expect to see obama use it here, it is a fine old communist custom.

We have our share of communist practices already, remember when they did the forced sterilization of the Native American women in the 1950’s.

But I did look forward to checking this thread and see what was new. ;)<<

Thank you, I am glad you are catching up, yes, I had missed you.

I do try to post something new...when I find it.

This thread is like the novelist world, there are only 9 plots [LOL, as I recall] for novels, and it is up to the writer [poster] to twist the story into a new plot.

Seriously, I do think more and more of this society is the same as what you are encountering, except for some of the rural areas perhaps.<<<

That is the worst of it, I live 10 miles from town and in the middle of 3 acres, all lots are one acre or larger in this area.

And I wind up with California convicts, generations of them, across the street, and up the street, as there is an old mobile home park up there that allows them in.

I offered to shoot the one, that opened my door and got half his body in, as he came up the steps and I started screaming.

He said “Oh, I thought noone was here”.

After I locked the door, I told him through the window that I would shoot him and he couldn’t understand me, so I told him 3 times, guess he got the message, for him I never saw again.

Because I cannot go outdoors, they think the place is abandoned and steal me blind.

had water puddle in it, they declared it a ‘wetland’<<<<

Remember where you fired all the bullets in Yucca?

The last that I heard, they had declared that a Wetland!!!!

That has to be the driest part of our county.
