Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. Where are they? can you crate them for shipping?
My husband once upon a time sold car motors and freight shipped them on a truck, but that was San Diego.

The cost of shipping them would far outweigh their cost, so it’s going to have to be someone local.
They’re all Craftsmen tools...table saw, radial arm saw, drill press, *sniff* my band saw, um...I know there’s more...ya don’t REALLY want me to crawl thru the mess in the garage, now, do you? :)
They’re all on tables, with locking wheels...

Prepping for a major run to the “Gulch” mid March... I have a question for ALL of you: I’m transporting large amounts of food on this run. How much effect will there be on canned goods that I know will get frozen on the long trip? No avoiding that happening unless I wait to transport those until after the thaw! Will the freezing/thawing adverse it’s nutritional value much? I have my doubts it would, but just throwing it out here to see if anyone knows!<<<
I am thinking that if the cans freeze, it will break the seals and it will spoil.
Cans expand when frozen.
You will need to wait for warmer weather, take only what you can keep from freezing.
But, if there is an empty freezer going with you, you might get away with putting them in the freezer and then wrapping the freezer in quilts, plastic or?
That is how I moved my jars of food to Arizona, but there was not a freezing worry.
I am glad you are getting your seeds, the late shoppers are not going to get anything to plant, or not the old varieties.
I see sold out all over the internet and hear it is the same in the stores.
We miss you already, be careful and stay safe, and an extra hug for the wife, she deserves it, putting up with you.

Quite a change from 2007 when a late freeze left us with out a single berry for the year..
kinda like Garfield the cat , better eat all the lasagna, may not be any tomorrow..relates to can, freeze and
dry-store when possible.. we are in for a rough one.<<<

I am so glad you were able to find the cheap seeds, I always loved finding them, as I could afford to buy anything that I wanted, even flowers that don’t grow here.......but I planted them anyway.

Not right now... I have refrained from planting okra because only a couple of plants will give you a whole summers worth of okra and need to be picked every couple of days.<<<

Ok, good idea, but first how about a big adobe oven for bread baking?
The call it Artistic bread I think, but it is the taste that interests me, it should be outstanding.
You could use brick of course, but adobe is free.

The man that bought our horses in Ramona, allowed us on his ranch, to see the gathering spot for the Indian women, where they did their grinding.
In a grove of huge trees, there were several large almost flat granite boulders, just the right height to sit on, and they were full of grinding holes.
I didn’t count them, but could see that there might well be
50 to a 100 holes, several boulders.
I’ve got lots of seeds up and growing, I have to do my “tilling” by hand for the moment, mixing in compost etc.<<<

Agree that money will not always buy what you need.
So I am on a different tack here.
If you have savings in the banks, take out part of it and hide it, as every day another bank closes or gets taken over and sooner or later the gov will take them over and some in law of a politician, will screw up your account.
Keep copies on paper of all your accounts, even if you bank on line.
Do not bury money as bills, for sooner or later the water will get in and you will find a glob, which the bank will not accept.
A friend managed to send it to the treasury and they returned about half the known value.
LOL, right now pennies might be safe, as if they are old, the copper is worth more than a penny.
