Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

People are really on edge these days. It does seem like they are biting each others’ heads off even on FR. It’s frustration, fear, and disbelief, I think.

It’s hard to come to terms with what is happening to the US. Just beyond understanding, unless you believe in End Times.

Yes, it was netmilsmom, and I think she posted the instructions on this page, very interesting and handy for emergencies.

Netmilsmom, thanks for posting the instructions.

WAG, did you check Craigs list, there are a lot of folks that shop there, I think WNeighbor does.

If they thought - looking at those records - that he had progressed to where they would feel safe with him on the street, I would go with their judgement as all I could do would be to relate to what was 10 years ago and not to the current situation.<<<

Excellent.

Solves a lot of problems.

“Just wondering what everyone’s thoughts on life are these days?”

Life keeps rolling along for me. As my good friend Dean would say “I’m just toddling along on the great road of life”. On the immediate side...I’m healthy, my wife, kids and grandkids are healthy and the remainder of my loved ones are healthy. My sis is healthy in Arizona and my BIL is too. My dad’s health is declining but with congestive heart failure that is not unexpected. My mom, my life-giver, passed away last October after battling Parkinson for 20 years. My in-laws are healthy at 92 and 87. Most all of us (not retired) are working with the exception of 2...one who is anticipating a job soon and one who is idling on unemployment. When you have ALL THIS, the rest is EASY.

I have been on this forum for 10 years and NOT ONE TIME have been in a heated discussion with OR been disappointed, discouraged by another FReeper. After my family and many friends I have had, I consider FReepers and those in the armed forces the finest people on planet earth...despite never having met a FReeper in person. I am encouraged every day because there are so many like-minded people on this forum, in this world.

I am concerned for my republic, my country and pledge my life, honor and non-existent fortune to defend it against every enemy, foreign & domestic.

life...

it has been so fabulous and fascinating that words cannot describe it.

mean and sometimes far beyond what I would consider nice, to the point of having a very negative agenda when I read through threads these days. I don’t know why this is happening, but it seems to be going on everywhere.<<<

My guess is that reality is setting in, they listen and know the real troubles this last election has brought to all of us and that there will not be a silver lining.

I know I feel stressed at times, when I look at the truths this election is giving us.

We love you here and we know that the hard times are coming, we can’t stop them, so we will do our best to meet them headon.

It won’t matter much what is stored in the closet, anyone can whip out a credit card and place a big order, but we must have the needed info in our brains to make it through.

You need a hug, so I am sending three.

I think the people I'm around aren't aware. They're just going along in ignorance. I even tried to talk to my sister today - to tell her it doesn't hurt to make some preparations, just in case. No response, nothing. I'd rather see the frustration, fear, and disbelief! At least, after that passes, then they can deal with reality.

Ominous forfeiture provisions in new bill restricting use of federal land.

In the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, a “forfeiture” provision would let the government confiscate “all vehicles and equipment of any person” who digs up or removes a rock or a bone from federal land that meets the bill’s broad definition of “paleontological resource,” says a report by Jon Berlau of the Competitive Enterprise Institute.

US-CERT Current Activity

New Variant of Conficker/Downadup Worm Circulating

Original release date: February 23, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Last revised: February 23, 2009 at 5:02 pm

US-CERT is aware of public reports concerning a new variant of the
Conficker/Downadup worm, named Conficker B++. This variant propagates
itself via multiple methods, including exploitation of the previously
patched vulnerability addressed in MS08-067, password guessing, and
the infection of removable media. Most significantly, Conficker B++
implements a new backdoor with “auto-update” functionality, allowing
machines compromised by the new variant to have additional malicious
code installed on them. According to Microsoft, there is no indication
that systems infected with previous variants of Conficker can
automatically be re-infected with the B++ variant.

US-CERT strongly encourages users to review Microsoft Security
Bulletin MS08-067 and update unpatched systems as soon as possible.

Additionally, US-CERT recommends that users take the following
preventative measures to help mitigate the security risks:
* Install antivirus software, and keep the virus signatures up to
date.
* Review the Microsoft Malware Protection Center blog entry for
details regarding the worm.
* Review the Using Caution with USB Drives Cyber Security Tip for
more information on protecting removable media.

Well then.....other than going "out there" in the general public, newspapers, Craig's List, etc....anybody have a SAFE way for me to advertise selling all of Gramp's power tools? The big ones, not the hand held. Yes, I have his permission. :)

Geeeez!

I stay away for five or six days and get a ping from WestCoastGal and notice we have grown by a full thousand posts! Looks like I'm going to have to get caught up soon, or I never WILL catch up!

Told you last time I rec'd my tobacco seeds... Been waiting for HeirloomAcreSeeds that I ordered first of the year, and they STILL had not shown up!

I called them, and a sweet sounding Lady took a look into the order, and said they will get them out to me at the end of the week. They are truly busy there... the background noise I heard on the phone sounded like the circus was in town!

I've been hedging my bets by stopping off at various stores and buyin BAGS of different vegetable seeds... We aren't alone in this pursuit Granny, every place I go says their stock is flying off the shelves... just like ammunition is... I made a major score at the huge Navy Exchange store! Caught them just as they were putting up the seed displays and snagged fresh seeds at the best price I've seen anywhere!!

Prepping for a major run to the "Gulch" mid March... I have a question for ALL of you: I'm transporting large amounts of food on this run. How much effect will there be on canned goods that I know will get frozen on the long trip? No avoiding that happening unless I wait to transport those until after the thaw! Will the freezing/thawing adverse it's nutritional value much? I have my doubts it would, but just throwing it out here to see if anyone knows!

Thank you for the welcome and for the wealth of knowledge these threads contain.

Yes they were 20cents each so I grabbed 2-3 packs of each. and will look for more next trip.

I'm blessed to have an elder neighbor who lays in several gardens and we have been discussing our spring plans since the first frost last fall.

Last fall we had more blueberries of late variety that were still bearing up to frost.

Quite a change from 2007 when a late freeze left us with out a single berry for the year..

kinda like Garfield the cat , better eat all the lasagna, may not be any tomorrow..relates to can, freeze and
dry-store when possible.. we are in for a rough one.
