For a species that went extinct more than 25,000 years ago, 2008 has been a hell of a year for Neanderthals. The ancient humans got their first complete mitochondrial genome sequence, their stone tools turned out every bit as efficient as ours, and we even heard them speak.
Here are some of our favourite Neanderthal discoveries of 2008.

I’ve been called both a “Redneck” and a “Neanderthal”. Neither name offends me.
Good science is something I always appreciate. However, it amazes me how many words some scientific journals can use to say utterly nothing.
It is also amazing to read “old” scientific treatises with current knowledge and see how often their theories were totally wrong.
My ancestors claimed to be “Scotch/Irish”, whatever that meant.
Scientific tools are politically and culturally neutral, but humans are not.
“A Good Year for Grant Money”....
Yeh they won big this year. But they aren’t extinct. Only a bunch of ignorant Neanderthals could have elected Obama.
Since when did the beasts become human. I like the Neanderthal with the long black hair looking like a monkey. Helen Thomas is a better representation. Why is it so important for the Neanderthals to become human?
That meant; One parent was from Scotland. The other from Ireland.
;-)
Ignorant in today’s terms, maybe. But they were not ignorant of the skills needed to survive for hundreds of thousands of years in a harsh environment. Few of us could survive for long thrown back into even the most temperate of the interglacial periods with just our hands, feet and brains.
Then those darned Homo Sapiens came out of Africa, faded to white and outcompeted them for resources, killed some of them off and assimilated the rest.
EEEVIL white men!
If the Neanderthals were indeed human they had souls, and God in His mercy has dealt with them appropriately.
It means you are a cheap drunk.
Yes, but I do not drink. I guess that make me a really cheap drunk.
And I sure don’t sip the Kool-Aid.
Neanderthals were smarter than to vote for BO, out of self preservation.
It was not that simple, and many generations past.
Long before we were Burned out of Alabama during Reconstruction after the last Civil War.
I would say, “More ‘Scotch’ than Irish,” but then I might be punn-ished for it.
Scotch/Irish = No. Ireland.
Every year academia produces 300 new hair-brained theories on what really killed off the Neanderthals. They are funny to read because they are typically projections of the theorist's twisted leftist views of the modern world. I have never read a single theory that said the Neanderthals were killed off in war but that is what Occam's razor overwhelmingly points to. Human means war maker but the leftists in academia just can't accept that. They want to believe war is a recent artificial invention that can be stamped out. Yet war has been the driver of most human evolution, the reason we evolved so amazingly quickly compared to other animals and why we developed intelligence far in excess of that needed to find food and shelter.
Back when I was young, I liked Haig & Haig and JB Scotch.
Would that qualify me for being mostly Scottish? Hi Hi
Well yeah it that simple and you explained it with "many generations past". Somewhere waaaaaay back in your family tree a pure breed Scot ancestor married a pure bred 'Mick'. I'm 1/2 Irish so I can say that ;-)
And it makes perfect sense that your family goes back to Alabama as if my history is correct (it is), the South was mostly settled by the "Scotch/Irish", though usually a bit further North.
And not to hijack the thread but when I see "Reconstruction" I get sick (I'm from IL and my family tree always was 'Northern'). That time is a stain on the USA. The repercussions of that affected Southern Whites for almost One Hundred years and kept the South poor as pi$$.Over the years I've had friends and neighbors from Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and met & talked folks from West Virginia and Northern Florida (it Ain't Disneyworld). When I heard what they had to do to scrape by, I got just as mad at the 'Yankees' as they were. Not until recent times with factories moving South to escape unions has the South had any real chances financial growth.
Anyway, have a Happy New Year :-)
You are more knowledgeable about Southern history than most people today.
Many think Southerners are all backward and uneducated. TV and the movies have spent generation trying to instill that.
I hate the Left. It was a real education for me when I moved to NM in 1972. This West Texas farm boy got his first view of a Mine Union Town, and the Lefties that inhabited the local University and the local Unions. It made a lasting impression.
That was my first view of Liberation Theology, and real Commies.
That is another battle.
